The American Sheep Industry Association reports that Cone Mills, which was acquired out of bankruptcy last week, is joining with Burlington Industries to form International Textile Group.

Cone Mills will assume responsibility for Burlington Burlmex denim manufacturing in Mexico. Cone Jacquards will be consolidated with Burlington’s two Jacquard operations into a single Burlington Company and Cone’s Carlisle subsidiary will also become part of Burlington. Burlington House and Cone Jacquards and Carlisle will operate under ITG’s newly formed Home Furnishing Business.

All four companies will operate from a single headquarters in Greensboro, N.C., if local authorities provide the requested incentives.

Signup for the 2004 "Texas Brigades," a group of wildlife-oriented youth camps targeting 13 to 17 year-old high school students, is now underway.

Bass, the popular game fish, has joined the regular lineup of bobwhite quail, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey that form the nuclei for the camps. The Brigades arm participants with communications skills, leadership development and a healthy dose of wildlife management.

Texas Brigades founder Dr. Dale Rollins, Texas Cooperative Extension wildlife specialist at San Angelo, said The Texas Brigades' core curriculum is leadership development melded with sound natural resource conservation practices.

The Buckskin Brigade dates and locations are: South Texas, 5th Battalion, La Pryor, May 30-June 3; and North Texas, 3nd Battalion, Albany, July 18-22. Dates and locations for the Bobwhite Brigades are: Rolling Plains, 12th Battalion, Lueders, June 19-24; and South Texas, 7th Battalion, Campbellton, July 11-15.

The East Texas "Feathered Forces" Brigade, 8th Battalion, July 25-29 at Broaddus, focuses on quail and turkey.

The 1st Bass Brigade Battalion will be June 27-July 1 at McKinney Roughs, which is located between Austin and Bastrop.

Tuition is $300 per cadet, but Rollins said the cost shouldn't deter applicants. "We don't want financial hardships to stop any cadet from applying," said Rollins. "We have sponsors who are willing to provide financial aid if requested."

Applications, due by April 15, are available online at http://texnat.tamu.edu or www.texasbrigades.org. They may be sent to Helen Holdsworth, 401 Isom Road, Suite 237, San Antonio, TX 78216.

Each camp is limited to 30 participants per session.

Further information is available from Rollins at (325) 653-4576, via e-mail at d-rollins@tamu.edu, or Helen Holdsworth, San Antonio-based Texas Brigades executive director, at (800) TEX-WILD, (210) 826-2904, or via e-mail at h_holdsworth@texas-wildlife.org.
