U.S. Meat Production
2.3% Below A Year Ago

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 854.1 million pounds, .9 percent less than a week earlier and 2.3 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down five percent at 9.6 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 619,000 head, compared with 630,000 the previous week and 658,000 a year ago, liveweights 1227 pounds, 1227 and 1226, respectively; beef production was 458.1 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 9.2 percent at 6,766,000 head, beef production down 10.5 percent at 5.04 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 18,000 head, 19,000 and 19,000, liveweights 328 pounds, 333 and 322; veal production was 3.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 9.4 percent at 211,000 head, veal production down 7.8 percent at 40.8 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,940,000 head, 1,938,000 and 1,928,000, liveweights 268 pounds each period; pork production was 387.7 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.2 percent at 22,286,000 head, pork production up 2.1 percent at 4.47 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 67,000 head, 62,000 and 59,000, liveweights 143 pounds, 141 and 138; lamb and mutton production was 4.8 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 1.1 percent at 607,000 head, lamb and mutton production up .4 percent at 42.2 million pounds.
