Cattle On Feed Up 4 Percent
Nationwide In 1000-Head Lots
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter
March 1 in feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head totaled 10.98
million head, four percent above last year but five percent below two
years ago.
February placements totaled 1.61 million, two percent fewer than in
February 2003 and 11 percent fewer than in 2002; net placements were
1.54 million. Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600
pounds came to 319,000 head; 600-699 pounds 351,000; 700-799 pounds
548,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 392,000.
February marketings totaled 1.69 million, two percent below last
year and six percent below the year before.
Other disappearance came to 69,000 head during February, three
percent below 2003 and but 10 percent above 2002.
Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to a year
earlier:
Cattle on feed: Arizona 295,000 head, up six percent; California
500,000, up five percent; Colorado 1,020,000, up three percent; Iowa
405,000, up seven percent; Kansas 2,390,000, up seven percent;
Nebraska 2,270,000, up four percent; and Texas 2,690,000, up five
percent.
Placements: Arizona 27,000, up 23 percent; California 56,000, up
four percent; Colorado 155,000, down three percent; Iowa 61,000, down
three percent; Kansas 390,000, down five percent; Nebraska 350,000, up
six percent; and Texas 350,000, down five percent.
Marketings: Arizona 25,000, down 19 percent; California 52,000,
down seven percent; Colorado 165,000, down 13 percent; Iowa 40,000,
down 44 percent; Kansas 405,000, up nine percent; Nebraska 345,000,
down one percent; and Texas 420,000, up six percent.
