50 YEARS AGO

Lem Jones of Junction this week bought the following cattle, all for immediate or nearby delivery: 45 Angus cows, 25 leading calves and the balance springers, from Gus Grabo of Brenham at $145 each; 225 good Hereford cows and calves at $130 a pair and 45 dry cows at $95 each from YO Ranch of Kerrville, ranging in age from three to eight years; 240 straight four year-old medium quality Hereford cows, about 65 percent with calves, from J.B. Parker of Mathis at $116 each.

Jones also bought one load of wooled ewes and lambs at $20 a pair from Marvin Cowsert of Junction and resold these at $22 a pair.

Frank Hinkson of Muleshoe, Texas, sold 330 yearling heifers at 18 cents and 440 steers at 20 cents to Weisbart Cattle Company, Brush, Colorado, for April 27 delivery.

Max Wertheim of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, this week sold 250 light steer calves, expected to weigh around 360 pounds, to a Winfield, Kansas buyer at $22.40 cwt. for delivery next week.

Mansfield Cattle Company of Vega last Friday sold 325 mixed short-age yearlings, wintered on cake and grass, to J.O. Wells of Canadian at $21.50 on steers and $18.50 on heifers, to deliver April 28 without a cut.

G.W. Clark of Amarillo bought 380 fleshy steers weighing 825 pounds at $20.50 from Pete Cator of Morse, Texas, April 20 delivery.

W.F. Cline of Amarillo bought, from Herb Richter, 420 steer yearlings at $19.90 for delivery off wheat in the Dalhart area this week; these were estimated to weigh about 625 pounds.

45 YEARS AGO

Jack Drake, San Angelo, bought around 1000 clipped oldcrop feeder lambs this week at prices ranging from $16 to $17 cwt. Included were 498 lambs weighing 103 pounds from W.A. Blaylock of Eldorado, and 516 lambs weighing 85 pounds bought through Amos Womble, San Angelo.

Drake also bought 165 spring lambs weighing 69 pounds from J.C. Brosig, Paint Rock, at $18.50 cwt.

Bill O'Laughlin of Miami, Texas, sold 75 stocker cows and calves for May 1-15 delivery at $275 to Elmer Melton, Pampa.

Dave Yauck of Darrouzett, Texas, is reported to have sold 200 steer yearlings averaging 584 pounds at $30 cwt., delivered recently to Ab Daily of Darrouzett.

Paul Newman of Lubbock sold two loads of choice fed steers weighing 1125 pounds at $28.25, delivered April 19 to Armour and Co., Fort Worth.

Mc Fadin & Baker of Uvalde this week shipped about six loads of oldcrop slaughter lambs weighing 100-105 pounds at $17 cwt. to Swift and Co., Fort Worth.

40 YEARS AGO

Foster Pickett of Amarillo bought 400 Hereford steer yearlings averaging 590 pounds at $23.50 and received them this week from Vernon Morgan of Amarillo; these were located near Dimmitt.

Ernest Langenegger & Sons of Hagerman, N.M., sold three loads of fed steers weighing 1050 and grading mostly choice at $23.50, delivered last week to Texas Meat Packers Inc., Dallas; and the Diedrichsen feedlot at Dumas, Texas, sold 100 steers weighing 1000 at the same price to the same firm for delivery this week.

G.H. Brewster, Dalhart, bought 110 steer calves weighing 410 pounds at $25 and received them last week in the Tucumcari, N.M. area.

A total of 403,000 cattle and calves were marketed through Texas auctions during March this year, seven percent more than a year earlier, the USDA reports. Sheep and goat receipts totaled 121,000 head, 19 percent above a year ago.

Norman Hamilton of Johnson, Kan., and Dick Jackson of Guymon, Okla., sold 160 Hereford and Angus steer yearlings expected to weigh 625-650 pounds at $23 for May 10-20 delivery, their option, to a Johnson buyer. These cattle have been wintered on wheat pasture near Johnson.

M&G Feedlot, Henderson, Colo., sold 138 heifers weighing 925 pounds at $30 to Dave Averch Packing Co., Denver.

Sam Singleton, Dalhart, sold 300 Hereford, Angus and a few black baldface steers, about half for June 1 delivery expected to weigh 700 at $30, the balance to weigh 575 for June 15 at $32.50 to G.L. Willis, Dimmitt.

A Texas dealer at presstime was dickering on more than 4000 good and choice steer yearlings expected to weigh 650-675 pounds at $29.50 for fall delivery and crossbred steer calves weighing 460-470 at $35 for May delivery.

A package of 248 pound choice native steers brought a record $51.20 in Fort Worth.

Pete Miffleton, Llano, sold 2500 oldcrop mixed lambs, about 400 whitefaces and the balance blackface crossbreds, expected to weigh 100 pounds and have an end of fats at $25.75 for May 10 delivery to a Georgetown buyer.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 672 million pounds, four percent above the previous week and 11 percent above a year ago.

Texas cattle feeders had 2,219,000 head in their pens April 1, according to the Texas Crop & Livestock Reporting Service. This is two percent below a year earlier.

Good demand prevailed for all classes of mohair Tuesday in South Africa’s Cape sale, clearance reaching 97 percent of the approximately 935,000 pounds on offer.

Wool trading remains extremely slow. In Territory trading, Montana sold a total of 50,000 pounds of mostly 22-23.5 micron, bellies out and untied, staple length, for 45-50 cents f.o.b. grease; the Northeast Montana pool of 2056 whiteface fleeces brought 31 cents and 331 blackface fleeces 16 cents grease.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter April 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 8.89 million head, up three percent from the same day last year but slightly below the figure for April 1, 1997.

Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in Oklahoma for May delivery 420 No. 1˝ Okie and crossbred steers to weigh 750 pounds at $68.50; in North Texas for current delivery 70 No. 1˝ crossbred steers weighing 750 at $69, also 175 No. 1 Okie and crossbred steers weighing 800 at $66 and 100 similar heifers weighing 675-700 at the same price.

Feeder lambs weighing 80-85 pounds and moving direct in West Texas brought $82-87. California had 100-120 pounders at $69-72.

Fat lambs weighing 120-140 pounds moving direct from Texas feedlots to packers made $66-70, 140-160 pounds $63-66.
