U.S. Meat Production
3.6% Below A Year Ago

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 831.5 million pounds, 2.4 percent more than a week earlier and 3.6 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down 4.8 percent at 12.9 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 591,000 head, compared with 564,000 a week earlier and 666,000 a year ago, liveweights 1208 pounds, 1212 and 1204, respectively; beef production was 431.7 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 9.2 percent at 9,119,000 head, beef production 6.74 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 9000 head, 5000 and 17,000, liveweights 280 pounds, 297 and 334; veal production was 1.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 18.8 percent at 248,000 head, veal production down 20.3 percent at 46.9 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,978,000 head, 1,973,000 and 1,877,000, liveweights 269 pounds, 268 and 268; pork production was 395.1 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.6 percent at 30,086,000 head, pork production up 2.5 percent at 6.03 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 45,000 head, 53,000 and 63,000, liveweights 144 pounds, 146 and 125; lamb and mutton production was 3.2 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 3.9 percent at 849,000 head, lamb and mutton production down .5 percent at 59.9 million pounds.
