Cattle On Feed Up Slightly
Nationwide In 1000-Head Lots
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter
April 1 in feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head totaled 10.75
million head, slightly above last year but seven percent below two
years ago.
March placements totaled 1.8 million, 11 percent fewer than in
March 2003 and eight percent fewer than in 2002; net placements were
1.74 million. Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600
pounds came to 347,000 head; 600-699 pounds 346,000; 700-799 pounds
641,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 470,000.
March marketings totaled 1.97 million, nine percent above last year
and eight percent above the year before.
Other disappearance came to 67,000 head during March, eight percent
above 2003 and three percent below 2002.
Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to a year
earlier:
Cattle on feed: Arizona 293,000 head, up five percent; California
495,000, up four percent; Colorado 970,000, unchanged; Iowa 415,000,
up 11 percent; Kansas 2,360,000, up two percent; Nebraska 2,210,000,
up one percent; and Texas 2,640,000, down one percent.
Placements: Arizona 33,000, up six percent; California 70,000, up
13 percent; Colorado 150,000, down six percent; Iowa 69,000, up 23
percent; Kansas 460,000, down 10 percent; Nebraska 295,000, down eight
percent; and Texas 490,000, down 18 percent.
Marketings: Arizona 32,000, up 10 percent; California 71,000, up 22
percent; Colorado 190,000, up nine percent; Iowa 56,000, down seven
percent; Kansas 470,000, up 15 percent; Nebraska 350,000, up 13
percent; and Texas 530,000, up 10 percent.
