Luke Branquinho Makes Big
Strides At Red Bluff Rodeo
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Steer wrestler Luke Branquinho of Los
Alamos, Calif., has spent the second half of the Wrangler ProRodeo
Tour's winter series trying to get in position to qualify for next
month's Pace Picante ProRodeo Chute-out at the Orleans Arena in Las
Vegas.
Last weekend at the Red Bluff, Calif. Round-Up, Branquinho
completed his journey from outsider to top of the pack. The three-time
National Finals Rodeo qualifier continued his solid run of tour rodeos
in Red Bluff, earning the aggregate title and 20.6 tour points,
putting him in first place with two events remaining.
At the halfway mark of the 12-city tour, Branquinho was out of
Chute-out contention, sitting 13th in the tour standings with just
23.5 points. Since then, he's more than tripled his point total,
highlighted by a 22.5-point effort at Rodeo Austin in Texas and a
solid outing at the Clark County Fair and Rodeo in Logandale, Nev.,
where he earned 16 tour points.
While Branquinho has made a rapid run through the steer wrestling
standings during the past month, tie-down roper Stran Smith has been
lurking just off the pace since a 33-point weekend in late February in
Tucson, Ariz., and San Angelo, Texas.
In Red Bluff, Smith earned 21 tour points and took over the top
spot. He claimed the aggregate title and finished fourth in the tour
round.
Cody Ohl, Stephenville, Texas, leads the Jack Daniels All-Around
competition with $55,166 in season earnings to date. He is followed by
Stran Smith, Childress, Texas, with $46,293; Trevor Brazile, Decatur,
