The direct slaughter steer and heifer trade was slow to develop last week, marking a second consecutive week of delayed sales. Trade settled $2 lower on both live and dressed sales except in Kansas, where sellers continued to resist the lower market.

Nation’s Feeder Cattle Trading Limited During Holiday Period
Last week’s light holiday receipts were not enough to fully establish a nationwide trend on stocker and feeder cattle. However, a higher undertone prevailed at most auction markets that were open for business and also in limited direct sales.

Angelo Feeder Lambs Higher, Fats Lower
Feeder lambs sold firm to $3 higher than two weeks ago, slaughter lambs $2-3 lower, slaughter ewes $2-5 higher, nannies and kids firm. Receipts totaled 11,738 head, around 15 percent slaughter ewes, 15 percent slaughter lambs, 10 percent feeder lambs and 60 percent goats.

Haskell Feeder Calves, Yearlings Sell Higher
Feeder steer and heifer calves sold $2-8 higher, yearlings $1-5 higher, slaughter cows steady, stock cows and pairs $25-50 higher. Receipts totaled 684 head.

San Saba Feeder Calf, Yearling Trend Higher
Feeder calves sold $3-5 higher, some $10 higher, yearlings $2-5 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs strong. Receipts totaled 964 head. There was no sale in Mason last week, due to the holiday.

Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie Wools Lower
Domestic wool trading was slow during last week’s holiday-shortened period. Demand was moderate, supplies light to moderate through the summer months.

Feeder steers and heifers sold $2-4 higher, slaughter cows steady, bulls $3-4 higher. Receipts totaled 976 head.

Brownwood Feeder Calf, Yearling Trade Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs steady to $25 higher. Receipts totaled 591 head.

Most Colorado City Cattle Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $2-5 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $2 higher, stock cows and pairs $20-25 higher. Receipts totaled 610 head.

Llano Steer Calves Off, Heifers Higher
Feeder steer yearlings sold steady to $3 lower, calves steady, heifers steady to $3 higher, cows $2 lower, bulls steady. Receipts totaled 722 head.

U.S. Meat Production 20.9% Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection during last week’s holiday-shortened period was estimated at 718.3 million pounds, 15 percent less than a week earlier and 20.9 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down 4.5 percent at 23.1 billion pounds.

Feeder steers and heifers sold $3-8 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 573 head.

Boxed Beef Values Edge Lower Again
The national comprehensive boxed beef cutout report on all fed steers and heifers sold last week lost 55 cents, closing at $140.67, the fourth consecutive week of lower values. The Choice-Select price spread was only 56 cents.

Hamilton Kids, Lambs Higher, Cattle Steady
Lambs sold $2-4 higher Monday, ewes steady, meat type kid goats $3-6 higher, nannies steady. Receipts totaled 1876 head. All cattle prices were steady Tuesday on receipts of 304 head.

Billings Feeder Lambs Mixed, Ewes Higher
Feeder lambs sold $3-4 lower than three weeks ago, some 80-90 pounders steady to $2 higher, slaughter ewes $2 higher. Receipts totaled 3325 head.

Milano Feeder Cattle Trends Highly Mixed
Feeder steers and heifers weighing 400-500 pounds sold mostly steady, calves $1-3 higher, yearlings $2-4 lower, slaughter cows $2-3 lower, bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1219 head.

Abilene Feeder Calves Up, Yearlings Firm
Feeder steer and heifer calves sold $1-2 higher, yearlings steady to firm, slaughter cows and bulls $2-3 higher, stock cows and pairs $30-50 higher. Receipts totaled 1640 head.
