50 YEARS AGO

Ernest Killough of Clovis is reported to have bought 100 cows and calves from Lee Hammond, also of Clovis, at $150 a pair. The cows are seven year-olds and the calves weigh around 300 pounds.

Larkin Renick of Llano is reported to have bought the Buster Poole and Sloan Sisters mixed calves at San Saba for August 15 delivery at 20 cents straight across. These are choice quality calves expected to weigh around 450 pounds at delivery.

D.P. Smith and Son of Llano contracted about 1600 mixed calves in Central Texas for August 15 to September 1 delivery at mainly $19 to $20 for heifers and steers, respectively, and $20 straight across for a few bunches of outstanding quality or favorable delivery conditions.

Owen Parks of San Saba has bought about 400 mixed calves for August delivery at $19 and $20 from Mrs. Al Groebl of San Angelo; these will be delivered from her San Saba County ranch.

Parks also bought, on order for Paul Higgs of Amarillo, around 225 mixed calves from Frank Sloan, W.A. Burnham and Tom Allen Sloan of San Saba for August 10 to 20 delivery at $19 straight across. He bought 200 mixed Angus calves from Buford Mayes for August 15 delivery at undisclosed prices.

DeWitt Reynolds of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is reported to have bought, from the Beck Ranch at Nara Visa, 600 mixed calves at 20 cents straight across for early fall delivery at or near Dalhart, Texas.

Roy Harkey, San Angelo commission agent, this week sold 600 mixed whiteface lambs weighing 69 pounds to Jess Stephens of Eden at 16 cents a pound. Stephens bought the lambs to put on fields in the Eden area.

45 YEARS AGO

Rusty Armstrong of Roswell has bought 100 Angus mixed calves from Walter Jones and 85 from Billy McDaniel, both of Roswell, for October delivery at $33 and $35 for heifers and steers, respectively; also 50 Angus steer calves from Mrs. Ed Reynolds there at $35 for October.

Paul Horney & Son, Yeso, N.M., last week delivered 1100 whiteface yearling ewes at $20 per head to Rusty Armstrong of Roswell.

Vernon Morgan, Amarillo, bought 76 heifer yearlings weighing 619 pounds at $26.90 and 150 steer yearlings weighing 739 at $27 and received them last week from Buck Wallace of Seymour.

O.O. Turner of Tulsa sold 125-140 mixed calves at $32 and $34 to a Dalhart buyer for Aug. 1-15 delivery; the heifers are expected to weigh around 375 and the steers 425 pounds.

Wool promotion can be fun, especially for sheepmen who select young ladies like Carrell Currie of Irving, Texas to help them. She was named Miss Wool of Texas in festivities at San Angelo last week. Local growers say if this sort of thing won’t help the sheep market, then the wool business is in bad shape indeed. Statistics: 19 years, 5’7", blonde, 117 pounds, 34-21-34.

40 YEARS AGO

Homer Hill of Hart, Texas, sold 190 fed steers weighing 1290 pounds, described as 75 percent choice, balance good, at $22 and delivered them last week to an Oklahoma City packer.

The Wagoner Ranch at Mosquero, N.M. sold about 450 cows and calves, the cows eight and nine years old, at $140 a pair, delivered last week. Part of them went to Bob Hulett of Amarillo and the rest to Malcolm Garrett of Clovis.

Walter Jones of Pampa sold 137 plain steers weighing 727 pounds at $17 and delivered them last week to a local buyer.

Gordon Bond of Albuquerque is reported to have bought some 20,000 lambs in the Vaughn area at $18 for the wethers and $19 for the ewes, October delivery. Max Riley of Roswell bought about 4000 head in the same area at $17.50 straight across. Practically all the lambs in this part of New Mexico are under contract.

Martin McMillan Jr., representing Lehmberg & McMillan, Mason, reports shipping this week 900 to 1000 good and choice Hereford and Angus calves he put together in the Mason area at $18 and $21, a few lightweight steers up to $22.

A Midwestern heat wave killed several thousand feedlot cattle in Nebraska and Iowa. Dr. Stanley Flores, Nebraska state veterinarian, said death loss could total 2500-3500 in the Omaha area in northeastern Nebraska. Across the Missouri River, his Iowa counterpart, Dr. E.A. Butler, said he had no estimate but thought Iowa losses could run to 2000-3000.

Jewell Avent, Tulia, bought 950 Hereford steer yearlings expected to weigh 750 at $32 for October 15-20 delivery from Wendell Sterrett, Roswell, N.M.

Rodney Smith, Happy, sold 400 choice Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers weighing 628 at $33.75 to Ward Golden, Dimmitt; and 400 Hereford and black baldface heifers weighing 534-552 at $30.80 delivered to an Amarillo feedlot.

Wheatheart Feeders, Perryton, sold 863 steers weighing 1000 pounds, 70 percent choice, at $32.

Texas Livestock Marketing Association, Fort Worth, bought in that area 650 Okie steers weighing about 675 pounds at $34.25.

Dalhart Feeding Club, Dalhart, bought in the Abilene, Texas area 250 Okie cutting bulls and steers at an average price of $32-32.50 weighing 590 and 610 pounds.

In Ozona this week 14,500 pounds of adult spring mohair traded at $2.222 in the grease.
