New Year Brings Higher Lamb Prices
After a couple of weeks’ rest due to the holidays, most Texas
auctions opened the new year with higher sheep and lamb prices.
Feeder lambs were $5-15 higher than the last reported sales,
slaughter lambs $3-15 higher and slaughter ewes $5-10 higher.
Slaughter orders continue to take most of the lightweight lambs.
Plains Fed Cattle Trade Quiet
As New Year Opens On Price Gap
Plains feedlots and packers were $4-5 apart on price at midweek, the
latter bidding $87 and the former asking $91-92.
Texas Slaughter Goat Prices
Moved To Much Higher Level
Slaughter kids opened the new year as if prices were no concern to
buyers. Most markets were closed during the holiday period and thus
did not cite a trend, but looking at the last reports in the old
year, values were generally $2-10 higher, some much higher.

be conducted under the Lamb Promotion, Research, and Information
Order to determine whether to continue the lamb checkoff program.

Nation’s Feeder Cattle Trade
Slow During Pre-Holiday Week
Too few feeder or stocker cattle were marketed during the
pre-Christmas week to establish a nationwide market trend. However,
the few livestock markets that held auctions reported surprisingly
good demand, even on light offerings.
Cattle On Feed Up Slightly
Nationwide In 1000-Head Lots
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter December 1 in feedlots with
a capacity of 1000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head, up
slightly from last year and four percent more than two years ago.

Arguments In IBP Case Appeal
The cattlemen argued that the jury's verdict should be reinstated.
IBP argued that their actions were legitimate. The appeals court
judges argued that the written briefs on the case weren't clear.
Fed Cattle Prices Off Last
Week, Trade Scant
Little fed cattle trading occurred during last week’s holiday
period. Limited sales in Nebraska were $1-2 lower on a dressed
basis.
November Pork Output Reaches
Record Volume
Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 3.77
billion pounds in November, up seven percent from the 3.53 billion
pounds produced in November 2003. Pork production was at a record
monthly high for November.
October Beef, Veal Imports
Increase 9.2%
USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports that beef and veal
imports for October were up 9.2 percent over a year ago at 98,752
metric tons. Pork imports were down 15.2 percent at 38,207 MT.

Frozen Meat Supplies Up 9 Percent
Total red meat supplies in freezers on November 30 were up nine
percent from last year at 900 million pounds.

Sell Higher
Feeder steer and heifer calves sold steady to $2 higher, yearlings
$2-4 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 669
head.
Angelo Market Offers 4871
Sheep And Goats
Due to the holiday closings there was no recent cattle sale and no
comparison on Tuesday’s sheep and goat sales. A higher undertone was
noted on the sheep and goat sale. Receipts totaled 4871 head, around
20 percent slaughter ewes, 15 percent slaughter lambs, five percent
feeder lambs and 60 percent goats.

Cattle Prices Steady
All classes of sheep and goats sold steady Monday on receipts of
1150 head. All cattle sold steady Tuesday on 97 head.
Brownwood Feeders Sell Steady
With Last Sale
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady with the last sale prior to
the holidays, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $2 higher, stock
cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 712 head.
Abilene Feeder Steers Lower,
Heifers Higher
Feeder steers sold $1-2 lower, heifers steady to $2 higher,
slaughter cows and bulls $3-5 higher, stock cows and pairs $50-100
higher. Receipts totaled 1126 head.
Milano Cites No Trend
Comparison On Cattle
No cattle price trend comparison was available due to previous
holiday closings. Receipts totaled 487 head.
Boxed Beef Values Climb To
$139.53
The national comprehensive boxed beef cutout report on all fed
steers and heifers sold last week moved up $3.08 to $139.53. Prime
moved up $5 while Choice was only 39 cents higher. Ribs lost around
$7 while loins were up $10 and at the highest level in four months.
2004 Texas Livestock To
Mexico Down 26%
Total livestock exports to Mexico through Texas ports last year were
down 26 percent at 268,728 head.
U.S. Meat Production 12.2%
Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was
estimated at 779.3 million pounds, 6.7 percent more than a week
earlier and 12.2 percent more than a year ago. No cumulative volume
was available.
Wool Trading Slow During
Holiday Week
Domestic wool trading was nearly at a standstill during last week’s
holiday period. Demand was light to good, primarily for short lamb
wool.

lightweights steady, slaughter goats $4-5 higher. Receipts totaled
