Plains Feedlots Awaiting Trade
On Fed Cattle Through Midweek

Plains feedlots were awaiting trade at midweek, as usual, bids on fed cattle about $90 against asking prices of $94-96. Fewer than 1000 head sold in the Texas Panhandle Tuesday at $93, and nothing was stirring by midafternoon Wednesday.

Take Lower Tack Most Places

Slaughter meat goat prices turned downward in most recent trading. Hamilton reported steady rates, but Junction was $2-3 lower, San Angelo weak to $5 lower, Fredericksburg $3-5 lower, and New Holland, Pennsylvania $5-10 lower per head.

Lamb Markets Steady, Ewes Mostly Softer
Feeder lambs were mostly steady with lighter weights enjoying any upticks in the market. Fat lambs were mostly steady with any weakness apparent on the heavier end, and slaughter ewes were weaker by a $1 or more at most markets.

R-CALF Opposes USDA’s Canadian
Cattle, Beef Import Regulations

R-CALF USA was extremely disappointed to see today’s Federal Register, in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture published its final rule (Rule 2) to begin allowing imports of Canadian cattle born after March 1, 1999, and Canadian cattle over 30 months of age, into the United States, scheduled to be effective Nov. 19. OTM cattle originating from a country affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy have an inherently higher risk for transmitting the disease.

As expected, USDA has released its final rule expanding cattle and beef imports from Canada. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has monitored this issue carefully from the beginning, including our filing of comments back in March.

New USDA Rule Allows Older Canadian Cattle
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service last week announced that it will expand the list of allowable imports from countries recognized as presenting a “minimal risk” of introducing bovine spongiform encephalopathy into the United States. Currently, Canada is the only minimal-risk country designated by the
United States.

Will Require Special Treatment

In mid-August the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, released a “Social Security No-Match Regulation.” The rule, which becomes effective on September 14, describes the obligations of employers when they receive “no-match” letters from the Social Security Administration or a letter regarding employment verification forms from the Department of Homeland Security.

Sheds Light on Elusive Feline

New genetic research adds to a body of evidence indicating mountain lion populations are generally healthy in parts of Texas, with significant populations in West and South Texas and harvest data pointing to stable or increasing numbers in the western part of the state over the past 90 years.

Feeder lambs sold steady Tuesday, heavy slaughter lambs steady, light slaughter lambs weak to $5 lower, slaughter ewes weak to $3 lower, nannies steady, kids weak to $5 lower. Receipts totaled 10,124 head.

Athens Feeder Cattle Steady To $2 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were steady to $2 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 2610 head.

Beeville Steer, Heifer Prices Termed Lower
Feeder steers were $4-10 lower, heifers $7-10 lower. Receipts totaled 680 head.

Billings Feeder Lamb Prices Steady To Up
Feeder lambs under 90 pounds were $4-8 higher, over 90 pounds mostly steady, good-fleshed slaughter ewes $1 higher, thinner ewes weak. Receipts totaled 2810 head.

Boxed Beef Cutout Price Trends Mixed
The national comprehensive boxed beef cutout report for last week showed prices up 19 cents from the previous week at $146.02. A year ago, the cutout value was $142.05.

Most Buffalo Feeder Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers 300-500 pounds were steady, 500-700 pounds mostly steady to instances $2 lower, slaughter cows $1 higher, slaughter bulls steady. Receipts totaled 2175 head.

Clifton Feeder Cattle Prices Termed Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were steady to instances $2 higher, slaughter cows $4 lower. Receipts totaled 1330 head.

Dalhart Feeder Cattle Prices Decrease $1-2
Feeder steers and heifers were mostly $1-2 lower except 500-550 pound heifers firm to $2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1790 head.

Most Fredericksburg Feeder Cattle Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1375 head.

Fredericksburg Lambs Steady, Goats Lower
Stock and feeder lambs were steady, slaughter lambs steady, stock and feeder goats $3-5 lower, slaughter goats $3-5 lower. Receipts totaled 3478 head.

Hamilton Lambs Lose, Cattle Steady To Down
Lambs sold $5-7 lower Monday, ewes $5 higher, kid goats and nannies steady. Other trends were unreported on receipts of 1990 head.

Haskell Auction Sells 1008 Head Of Cattle
Price trends were not reported on cattle receipts of 1008 head.

Most Mason, San Saba Feeder Cattle Steady
All classes of calves and yearlings sold steady in San Saba and Mason, packer cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 3044 head at the two sales.

Junction Kids Down, Most Sheep Steady
Thin ewes and bucks sold $1-2 lower, kids $2-3 lower, nannies steady to $1 lower, billies $1-2 higher, other sheep and goat classes steady. Receipts totaled 2911 head.

Most Lampasas Feeder Cattle Prices Decline
Feeder steers and heifers were $5-7 lower, slaughter cows $2-3 lower, slaughter bulls steady. Receipts totaled 943 head.

Mohair LDP Drops, Wool Is Unchanged
WASHINGTON — As of Wednesday the LDP for mohair dropped to 17 cents, down from 53 cents the previous two weeks. The LDP for ungraded wool remains unchanged at 15 cents.

Lockhart Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were $2-3 lower, slaughter cows $1 lower, slaughter bulls $2 lower. Receipts totaled 991 head.

Red Meat Production 1.3% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 948.7 million pounds, 11.2 percent lower than the previous week and .5 percent above last year. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was 1.3 percent above last year.

Nacogdoches Feeder Cattle $3-5 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were $3-5 lower, slaughter cows $1-2 lower, slaughter bulls $3-4 lower. Receipts totaled 1560 head.
