Plains Feedlots Mostly Holding
After Brief Flirtation With $98

Plains fed cattle trade marked six weeks at $99 last week, and bids and asking prices were on the same track again this week. A thousand head sold in the Panhandle area at $98 prior to presstime, but other feeders sat tight.

Better This Week

Light feeder lambs found stability this week with most markets reporting steady to higher bids. Heavier feeders found weaker markets, as did slaughter lambs and ewes.

Softer In Most Recent Sales

Slaughter meat goat prices were mostly softer again in most recent trading. Junction and Fredericksburg were steady, New Holland, Pennsylvania steady to weak, San Angelo weak to $5 lower, Hamilton $5 lower, and Goldthwaite $10-12 lower.

Almost three weeks after Hurricane Ike struck the upper Gulf Coast of Texas, shock is being replaced by worry, fatigue and nagging questions among ranchers in Chambers and Jefferson counties. Massive efforts are ongoing to find and care for surviving domestic livestock, dig out from under debris and fallen trees, and rebuild homes and ranching businesses.

Light slaughter lambs were weak to $5 lower, slaughter ewes weak, feeder lambs steady to $2 higher, kid goats weak to $5 lower, nannies steady. Sheep and goat receipts were 10,264 head.

Athens Feeder Cattle Trend Declines $3-5
Feeder steers and heifers were $3-5 lower, slaughter cows $3-5 lower, slaughter bulls $5-8 lower on light test. Receipts totaled 1980 head.

Beeville Feeder Steer Prices Lower By $2-5
Feeder steers were $2-5 lower, heifers $2-4 lower, slaughter cows $4-8 lower, slaughter bulls $9 lower. Receipts totaled 1003 head.

Boxed Beef Cutout Price Trends Mixed
The national comprehensive boxed beef report for last week showed prices down one cent from the previous week at $157.33. A year ago the cutout value was $144.35.

Feeder steers 300-400 pounds were steady, 400-700 pounds $3-4 lower, heifers 300-400 pounds mostly steady, 400-700 pounds $2-5 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $5 lower. Receipts totaled 2082 head.

Light Clifton Feeder Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers 300-450 pounds were steady, 450-700 pounds $1-3 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $3 lower. Receipts totaled 1449 head.

Coleman Feeder Steers Lower, Heifers Mixed
Feeder steers under 500 pounds were $2-4 lower, over 500 pounds $3 lower, heifers under 500 pounds steady to $2 higher, over 500 pounds $1-2 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $1-3 lower, replacement cows and cow-calf pairs steady to firm. Receipts totaled 2250 head.

Crockett Feeder Cattle Traded $5-10 Lower
No. 1 feeder steers and heifers were $5-7 lower, No. 2-3 $9-10 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $3-4 lower. Receipts totaled 2326 head.

Dalhart Heavy Steer, Heifer Prices Firm
Feeder steers under 600 pounds and heifers under 500 pounds were $3-5 lower, steers over 600 pounds and heifers over 500 pounds firm, slaughter cows and bulls $3-5 lower, instances $7 lower. Receipts totaled 2603 head.

Emory Feeder Steers, Heifers $5-10 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were $5-10 lower, slaughter cows $3-4 lower, slaughter bulls $3-5 lower. Receipts totaled 933 head.

Fredericksburg Heavy Steer Prices Lower
Steers over 560 pounds were $2-3 lower, heifers under 560 pounds steady, slaughter cows and bulls $2-3 lower. Receipts totaled 2443 head.

Fredericksburg Light Packer Lambs Lower
Stock and feeder lambs were $3-5 lower, lightweight slaughter lambs $8-10 lower, stock and feeder goats $3-5 lower on a light test, slaughter goats steady. Receipts totaled 2422 head.

Goldthwaite Heavy Packer Lambs Steady
Lightweight slaughter lambs were $10-15 lower, heavyweights steady, slaughter goats $10-12 lower. Receipts totaled 2158 head.

Hamilton Lambs Sell Steady, Steers Lower
Lambs sold steady on Monday, wool lambs $20 higher, ewes steady, kid goats $5 lower, nannies steady. Receipts totaled 1632 head.

Industry Feeder Steer, Trend Declines $7-9
Feeder steers were $7-9 lower, heifers $5-7 lower, slaughter cows $4-6 lower, slaughter bulls $6-8 lower on a light test. Receipts totaled 1009 head.

Mason, San Saba Light Stocker Cattle Higher
Lightweight stocker steers were $2 higher in San Saba and Mason, stocker heifers steady to $1 higher, feeder steers $3-4 lower, feeder heifers $3 lower, packer cows $5 lower, and packer bulls $3-4 lower. Receipts totaled 2624 head at the two sales.

San Saba Special Offers 2487 Head
Young cows, middle to long bred, sold for $990-1340 in a special replacement female sale at Jordan Cattle Auction, short bred cows, solidmouth cows, and those not carrying as much flesh $800-1000, big, long bred heifers $950-1170, shorter bred and lighter heifers $800-975, open heifers mostly $650-800 with one set of registered Brahmans $1460, better cow-calf pairs $1100-1470, less fleshy or solidmouth $950-1100. Receipts totaled 2487 head.

Junction Market Sells 1367 Sheep And Goats
Kid goats sold steady, other sheep and goat classes mostly steady to $2-3 lower. Receipts totaled 1367 head.

Lampasas Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Softer
Feeder steers under 500 pounds were $2-3 lower, over 500 pounds $3-5 lower, heifers $3-4 lower, slaughter cows steady to weak, slaughter bulls $2-3 lower. Receipts totaled 1320 head.

Mohair And Wool LDPs Unchanged
WASHINGTON — As of Wednesday the LDP for mohair remained at $1.31. The ungraded wool LDP was also unchanged at 17 cents.

Feeder steers and heifers 300-400 pounds were steady, over 400 pounds $3-5 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $4-6 lower. Receipts totaled 1033 head.

Red Meat Production 1% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 978.7 million pounds, 2.2 percent less than the previous week and one percent more than last year. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was 4.3 percent higher than last year.

Milano Feeder Cattle Prices $5-8 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were $5-8 lower on an offerings not as attractive as the previous week, slaughter cows $2-3 lower, slaughter bulls $3-5 lower. Receipts totaled 1078 head.

Yearling feeder cattle sold $1-3 lower across the country last week, steer and heifer calves $2-5 lower.

Navasota Feeder Steer Price Trend Off $4-6
Feeder steers were $4-6 lower, heifers $3-5 lower, slaughter cows $8-10 lower, slaughter bulls unevenly steady. Receipts totaled 2341 head.

PRCA Regular Season Nears End;
Brazile Closer To Another Wrap

The closer it gets to the end of the regular pro-rodeo season the more it looks like Trevor Brazile, Decatur, Texas, will once again take home PRCA’s all-around award. Brazile’s total earnings to date are $215,968. He is followed by Josh Peek, Pueblo, Colo., $146,574; Steven Dent, Mullen, Neb., $133,623; Curtis Cassidy, Donalda, Alberta, $118,463; Cash Myers, Athens, Tex., $116,781.

Feeder steers were $8-12 lower, heifers $5-10 lower, slaughter cows $3-6 lower, slaughter bulls $6 lower. Receipts totaled 2359 head.

Tulia Feeder Cattle Price Trend Declines
Feeder steers and heifers were $3-6 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $2-3 lower. Receipts totaled 3747 head.

U.S. Wool Trade Slow, Aussie Market Lower
Domestic wool trading on a clean basis was at a standstill last week, with no confirmed sales under light to moderate demand.
