Packer Lamb Price
Trends A Tough Call
The few sheep sales not closed this week for Independence Day
reported prices anywhere from $15 higher to $10 lower and everywhere
in between, but thousands of miles separate those auctions.
Goldthwaite called slaughter lambs steady, while Hamilton lambs were
$5-10 lower. New Holland packer lambs sold mostly $10-15 higher, and
Sioux Falls slaughter lamb prices were off $4-6.

Feedlots Hold For $85
After Four Weeks Of $82 Trade
After four straight weeks at $82, Plains cattle feeders this week
were bumping asking prices a notch or so to $85. Packer bids were
$81, a couple of bucks better than last week’s initial offer.

Mixed In Limited Trade Test
Holiday-limited Texas slaughter meat prices were lower in most
recent trading, New Holland, Pennsylvania mostly $5-7 higher per
head. In Texas, Hamilton was $5 lower per hundredweight, Goldthwaite
$5-7 lower; Fredericksburg and San Angelo were closed for the week
in observance of Independence Day.

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote soon on
controversial climate change legislation, the so-called cap and
trade policy which would make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
mandatory and would, among other things, require that six percent of

While the debate on climate change policy continues in Washington,
Texas’ agriculture industry representatives were all ears recently
at the 2009 Ag Forum in Austin, learning more about the potential
impacts on livestock and crop production.
USDA Plantings Data Show Corn Acres Up
Total U.S. crop area is down 1.2 percent from last year, but soybean
acres are up 2.3 percent and corn acres are up 1.2 percent,
according to the acreage report released Tuesday by USDA’s National
Agricultural Statistics Service.
Angelo Feeder Steer Prices Hold Steady
There was no sheep and goat sale this week, June 30, in observance
of Independence Day. Feeder steers were steady last Thursday,
heifers weak to $2 lower, slaughter cows $2-4 higher, bulls $5-7
higher, stock cows and pairs firm to slightly higher. Cattle
receipts totaled 1363 head.
Heavy Athens Feeder Steers $2-3 Higher
Feeder steers under 500 pounds were $2-4 lower, over 500 pounds $2-3
higher, heifers $1-3 lower, slaughter cows $1-3 higher, slaughter
bulls steady to $4 higher. Receipts totaled 1323 head.
Beeville Heifer Prices Termed Steady To
Firm
Feeder steers were steady to weak, heifers steady to firm, slaughter
cows $2-4 higher, slaughter bulls firm. Receipts totaled 723 head.
Belen Feeder Cattle Steady To $1 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers were steady to $1 lower, slaughter cows
and bulls $1-3 higher, pairs $100 higher. Receipts totaled 993 head.
Boxed Beef Cutout Prices Trend Higher
The national comprehensive boxed beef cutout report for last week
showed prices up 35 cents from the previous week at $138.07. A year
ago the cutout value was $160.37.
Clifton Feeder Cattle Trade Mostly Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were mostly steady to instances $2 lower,
slaughter cows $3 higher, slaughter bulls $2 higher on limited
offerings. Receipts totaled 1091 head.
Heavy Coleman Feeder Steers $1-2 Higher
Compared to two weeks ago, feeder steers under 500 pounds were $1-3
lower, over 500 pounds $1-2 higher, heifers under 500 pounds $1-2
lower, over 500 pounds steady to $3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls
$2-4 higher, replacement cows and cow-calf pairs $50 lower. Receipts
totaled 2131 head.
Heavy Crockett Feeder Cattle Steady To
Firm
Feeder steers and heifers under 400 pounds were steady to uneven,
over 400 pounds steady to firm, slaughter cows and bulls steady.
Receipts totaled 2801 head.
Dalhart Feeder Cattle Sell Firm To $1
Higher
Feeder steers and heifers were firm to $1 higher, slaughter cows
$3-4 higher, slaughter bulls steady. Receipts totaled 838 head.
DeQuincy Meat Goat Prices Quoted Lower
All represented meat goat classes were lower on receipts of 425
head.
Edinburg Feeder Cattle Prices Remain
Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were steady, slaughter cows and bulls $2
higher. Receipts totaled 548 head.
Emory Feeder Steer Prices $4-6 Lower
Feeder steers were $4-6 lower, heifers $2-4 lower, slaughter cows
and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1216 head.
Goldthwaite Packer Lamb Prices Quoted
Steady
Slaughter lambs were steady, feeder goats steady, slaughter goats
$3-5 lower. Receipts totaled 3270 head.
Light Graham Heifer Prices $1-2 Higher
Feeder steers under 500 pounds were $2-3 lower, over 500 pounds
steady to $3 lower, heifers under 500 pounds $1-2 higher, over 500
pounds steady, slaughter cows and bulls $2-4 lower, replacement cows
and cow-calf pairs $100 higher. Receipts totaled 1590 head.
Hamilton Kid Goat Price Trend $5 Lower
Kid goats were $5 lower Monday, nannies steady, wool lambs $10
lower, Barbado lambs $10 lower, Dorper lambs $5 lower, ewes steady.
Sheep and goat receipts totaled 2706 head.
Imported Meat Total 13% Below Last Year
Imported meat for the week ending May 16 totaled 23,350 metric tons.
This compares to 26,574 metric tons for the same period last year
and is a 13 percent decrease. The following figures represent metric
tons.
Light Industry Feeder Cattle $1-3 Lower
Feeder steers and heifers under 600 pounds were $1-3 lower, over 600
pounds steady, slaughter cows $1-2 higher, slaughter bulls $1-3
higher. Receipts totaled 1469 head.
Joplin Feeder Cattle Steady To $2 Lower
Steer and heifer calves were steady to $2 lower, yearlings steady to
$2 higher. Receipts totaled 5238 head.
San Saba And Mason Feeder Heifers Higher
Mason and San Saba feeder heifers were $2 higher, feeder steers
steady, stocker heifers steady, stocker steers $2 lower, packer cows
$3-5 higher, packer bulls $3 higher. Receipts totaled 1413 head for
the two sales.
Most Lampasas Steer Prices Steady To Firm
Feeder steers were steady to firm, instances $2-3 higher, heifers
steady to firm, instances $4-5 higher, slaughter cows $3-6 higher,
slaughter bulls $5-6 higher. Receipts totaled 647 head.

Heifer Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were steady, slaughter
cows and bulls steady to $2-3 higher. Receipts totaled 945 head.
Red Meat Production 4.6% Below Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was
estimated at 933.4 million pounds, .9 percent lower than the
previous week and 4.6 percent lower than last year. Cumulative meat
production for the year to date was 3.7 percent lower than last
year.
Milano Feeder Cattle Called Mostly Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were mostly steady on offerings not as
attractive as the previous week, slaughter cows steady to $1 lower,
slaughter bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1904 head.

Prices Trend Steady To $2 Higher
Yearling feeder cattle sold steady to $2 higher across the country
last week.
Navasota Feeder Cattle Prices Unevenly
Steady
Feeder steers, heifers and bulls were unevenly steady, slaughter
cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 2495 head.
Pleasanton Feeder Steer Prices Reported
Firm
Feeder steers were firm, heifers steady to firm, slaughter cows $3
higher, slaughter bulls steady to $3 higher. Receipts totaled 987
head.

Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie Market Higher
Domestic wool trading on a clean basis was slow last week, with no
confirmed sales and moderate to good demand. All prices are reported
on a weighted average.
