A&M Beef Course Set
For August 12-15

COLLEGE STATION — The 1996 Texas A&M University Beef Cattle Short Course set for August 12-14 will focus on management strategies for better times.

A group of economists including Chuck Lambert, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; Tom Brink, Cattle Fax; and Ron Knutson, Ernie Davis and Roland Smith, all from Texas A&M University, will attempt to put the beef market in perspective. Course organizers say the analysts will "reevaluate and separate the real causes from the myths for low cattle prices."

Strategies for effective management, including problems caused by the drouth and other environmental stresses, will also be discussed. Range and pasture forage quality, toxicity problems, financial consequences of dispersals, water and pond management, alternative feed sources as well as marketing and culling decisions will be discussed by Ron Gill, Joe Paschal, Dennis Herd, Monte Rouquett, Bill Pinchak, Larry Falconer, and several others. A panel of ranchers will also be on hand to react and discuss their recent and future strategies for survival.

A group of nutritional experts will discuss beef cattle size, milk and efficiency related to cow productivity and ranch carrying capacity.

More information is available from local county Extension agents or Dr. Larry Boleman at (409)845-2051.
