Canadian Cattle Import
Rate Slowing Slightly

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Slaughter cattle imports from Canada into the United States slowed slightly the first part of June but are still much higher than a year ago, says a report by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Cattle imports from Canada during the two week period ending June 22 totaled 53,017 head compared to 51,251 a year ago, with most of the increase in the northeastern states. Slaughter cattle imports in the western states were 44,145 head compared to 44,914 the same period a year ago. Feeder cattle imported into the western states totaled 2093 compared to 1127 last year, and northeastern states imported 6688 head compared to 4955 last year.

The total number of cattle imported from Canada for the year to date was up 43 percent at 800,704 head. Slaughter cattle imports in the western states were up 28 percent at 560,129 head, and feeder cattle in those states totaled 125,657 head compared to 10,521 last year.

Slaughter hogs from Canada totaled 68,559 head during the same two week period compared to 21,711 a year ago. Year to date figures are up 186 percent at 838,571 compared to 293,124 last year. Total hogs imported for the year to date are up 100 percent at 1,222,473 compared to 608,408 last year.

Feeder cattle imports from Mexico the week ending June 28 totaled 881 head, bringing the year to date total to 208,173, down 79 percent from 982,765 the same period last year. Slaughter cattle imports from Mexico were 816 for the year to date compared to 60,508 last year.
