Everitt of Vega, Texas, has sold and delivered 285 head of two and three year-old Brahman steers to Montana buyers at 26½ cents per pound; they averaged 698 pounds, pay weight, loaded at San Saba. __________ Harvey Hartgrove of Paint Rock sold a carload of whiteface lambs weighing 62 pounds at 29 cents a pound. __________ Graham and Whitefield of San Angelo bought 400 yearling ewes from Roy Spires at $26 per head. __________ J.C. Bell of Amarillo sold 24 cows and calves at 29 cents per pound to George Porter, also of Amarillo, for immediate delivery. They averaged 1407 pounds, or $408.03 per pair. __________ Ben Sheppard of Springfield, Missouri, has just bought a load of fancy Hereford steer calves averaging 502 pounds at 38½ cents per pound, weighed with a two percent shrink. The calves were bought for George C. Hembree of Jackson, Michigan. 40 YEARS AGO Leroy Russell of San Angelo this week bought and received a car of 70-pound whiteface mutton lambs from Bryan Hunt of Sonora at $15.50 cwt. He also bought, for delivery this week, 3100 whiteface mixed lambs, estimated to weigh around 60 pounds, at $15 from the Noelke Estate ranch at Rankin. __________ Triplett Cattle Co., Amarillo, has bought about 1000 mixed calves in the Brady and Mason areas in the last week or so for delivery from July 15 to Aug. 15, generally at prices from $16 to $17 for heifers and $19 to $20 for steers. __________ Mid-West Feed Yards, San Angelo, bought 1100-1200 whiteface mixed lambs from Scott and Mack Hartgrove of Paint Rock for immediate delivery at $15, and one load from Oscar Teague of Mertzon weighing around 63 pounds at the same price. __________ Several thousand good and choice Texas calves have sold for immediate and fall delivery during the past week or 10 days, mainly at $19 to $20 for steers, $16 to $18 for heifers, some outstanding calves a little higher. 35 YEARS AGO Union Feed Yards of Blythe, Calif., received a shipment of plain steers weighing around 400 pounds out of Oklahoma which cost $21 delivered to the feedlots. _________ Southern Livestock Order Buyers, Sulphur, La., shipped 90 Hereford and Angus steer calves weighing 400 pounds at $25 to Archie Pardue, Stamford, Texas. _________ Texas sheep country ranges as a whole are about the best on record for this time of year. Scattered thunderstorms during the past week added to the generally excellent moisture supply provided by previous statewide rains. New Mexico sheep trade continues very slow. Bulk of the state’s spring lambs won’t deliver until September or October. _________ Ranchers’ well-earned reputation for willingness to help a less fortunate person, and especially an unfortunate youngster, will be tested throughout West Texas during August when they’ll be invited to contribute livestock of any kind to the second annual Roundup Sale for benefit of Boys Ranch of West Texas. Last year a one-day Roundup Sale at Producers Livestock Auction in San Angelo resulted in net proceeds totaling several thousand dollars which met a critical need in the ranch’s financial position. This money came from livestock donated by stockmen and sold through the auction, without marketing charges, for benefit of the ranch. 30 YEARS AGO A record corn crop of 4,221,406,000 bushels was predicted July 1 by the Department of Agriculture. A wheat harvest of 1,240,079,000 bushels was estimated. _________ Cattle prices worked lower in most of the country this week. Extremely hot weather brought lower beef consumption and further price pressure on fed cattle in the Midwest and East. _________ Charlie Schwartz of Junction bought about 4000 young Angora mutton goats in the Junction area and southwest of there in the past few days at $7.50 per head in the hair. _________ Sam Perner of Ozona sold 300 head of choice crossbred lambs weighing 81 pounds at $21 to Carroll Farmer Co. in San Angelo. _________ Leroy Russell, San Angelo livestock dealer, bought 1500 blackface fat and feeder lambs from Joe Mayer of San Angelo and 1200 similar from Mrs. Frank Friend and Floy Friend Hume of San Angelo at $20 on the feeders and $22 on the fats. _________ Gene Newman, owner of Veribest Cattle Feeders, San Angelo, sold three loads of fed steers weighing 1050 and grading 60-70 percent choice to Texas packers at $24.25. 25 YEARS AGO Red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 633 million pounds, up one percent from the previous week but down 18 percent from the same week last year. _________ Biggest money winner in rodeo last week was Barry Burk, Duncan, Okla., who won nearly $2000 roping calves and wrestling steers in three rodeos about as widely separated as they could be: New York City, Cody, Wyo., and Springdale, Ark. _________ Sheep Feeders Inc., Hereford, sold 3000-3500 fed lambs in No. 1-2 pelts this week at $30 f.o.b. the lots. _________ Gaylord Reuter, El Reno, Okla., bought 700-800 No. 1 Okie and better steers weighing about 700 pounds at $31-31.50 off grass in the El Reno and Clinton, Okla. areas. _________ Texas sheep and lambs on feed July 1 totaled 141,000 head in lots of 2000 capacity or larger. That was seven percent higher than a month ago and 42 percent higher than a year ago. 20 YEARS AGO The Texas Animal Health Commission reports 12,363 cattle entered Texas from Mexico during June; 221,281 cattle and 14,866 sheep were shipped from Texas to other states during the month. _________ Gary Thompson, Carlsbad, N.M., sold out of that area a load of Brangus mixed calves, heifers weighing about 430 pounds at $33 and steers weighing 450 at $38. _________ Jimmy Snipes, McAlister, N.M., sold to a Clovis buyer 350 Okie steers weighing 680 pounds at $39.75. _________ Buck and Jim Sumners, representing B&J Cattle Co., Dalhart, bought in the Oklahoma Panhandle 93 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 565 pounds at $34. _________ Kingfisher County Feedyards, Okarche, Okla.: 240 heifers, 850 lbs., 75% choice, $39. _________ California lamb trade was still slow, sales reported last week at $46-48. 15 YEARS AGO Jim Walker, Seymour, sold to a Kansas buyer 1300 Okie and crossbred steers weighing just under 400 pounds at $63. _________ First fall mohair contract of the season has been reported by Producers Wool and Mohair Co., Del Rio. The firm has sold its entire accumulation of fall kid hair, projected at about 40,000 pounds, for a base price of $6.50 per pound. _________ Dean Myers, Seymour, sold to a local buyer 303 crossbred steers weighing 823 pounds at $60. _________ Leonard Freis, Amarillo and Denver, bought in the Amarillo area 1350 Hereford, black baldface and Charolais cross heifers weighing 650 pounds at $57.75. _________ XIT Feedyards, Dalhart: 1043 steers, 1100 lbs., 75% choice, $70.25; 106 heifers, 960 lbs., 70% choice, $67. _________ Swisher County Cattle Co., Tulia: 186 steers, 1090 lbs., 70% choice, $70.25 10 YEARS AGO Con-Agra, parent company of Armour, has bought the two Superior Packing Co. lamb plants in Dixon, Calif. and Ellensburg, Wash. An existing Armour lamb plant in Dixon will be converted to cattle.
