LAS CRUCES, N.M. —(USDA)— Livestock exports moving through the six Texas ports the first 10 months of this year are 88 percent above the same period of last year at 439,777 head compared to 234,155. Most of the exports are slaughter animals going into Mexico.

Cattle exports are 12 times the year ago level at 108,946 head compared to 9077 a year ago. Slaughter cattle took up the largest portion of the exports, amounting to 95,392 head compared to only 542 last year. Dairy animals totaled 10,701 this year compared to 6097 last year.

Sheep and lambs exported this year totaled 206,393 head compared to 210,395, down two percent. Slaughter ewes, on the other hand, are up slightly at 205,956 head compared to 204,167 last year. Breeding ewes this year are 276 head compared to 3243 last year.

Hog exports were about 10 times the number for the same period last year at 34,926 head compared to 3598. Slaughter hogs totaled 31,842 head compared to 432 last year.

Goat exports the first 10 months of the year were almost 12 times the number of a year ago at 86,634 head compared to 7344. Angora goats totaled 64,755 head compared to 7095 last year.
