45 YEARS AGO

Hubert Whitfield of San Angelo this week sold to American Stores of Pueblo, Colorado, 450 clipped yearling muttons, which averaged around 85 pounds, at 23 cents a pound. The lambs had been on drylot feed for 25 days. Also to American Stores, Bill Fields of Sonora sold 525 clipped muttons at 23 cents.

George Porter and Sam Elliott of Amarillo have bought, from J.E. Whatley of Amarillo, 125 crossbred Brahman steers weighing 650 pounds at 28 cents.

Minor Sims of Panhandle sold to Powers Brothers of White Deer, Texas, 212 choice bred heifers at $230 per head, through Neal Edwards of Amarillo.

Gene Koy of Roswell is reported to have sold 1000 bred ewes to Forest Dye at $14 per head.

The Cowgill Polled Hereford Ranch, Milan, Missouri, sold 52 Polled Herefords in their recent annual sale for an average of $690; six bulls averaged $557 and 46 females $705. Top bull price was $900, paid by W.L. Boyd, Slator, Missouri, for LT Domino 1st. Top female was Colo. Princess C. 225th, bought by Walter Wrightsman, Moreland, Indiana, at $1305.

40 YEARS AGO

Max Bassman, Amarillo, bought 93 choice heifer yearlings weighing 700 pounds at $15 from Dough Marshall of Canyon, delivered Nov. 4; also 151 heifer yearlings weighing 625 pounds at $14.25 from Crockett Kehoe of Texline, delivered Nov. 5. These were shipped to northern Colorado feeders.

Col. Russell Riggins sold, off his ranch near Nogal, N.M., 144 Angus steer yearlings at $18 and 93 Angus heifer yearlings weighing 542 at $15; also 61 Hereford heifer yearlings weighing 616 pounds at $13.50. All were sold to Ray Barr of Amarillo and were delivered Nov. 5.

Paul Wagoner of Groom is reported to have sold 52 feeder steers averaging 962 pounds at $16.40 to Homer Hill of Hart, Texas.

At Producers Livestock Auction, San Angelo, 3700 sheep sold on a strong active market. Slaughter wooled lambs brought $17.50-18.25, stocker and feeder lambs $15.50-17, lightweights $15-16; buck lambs $10-13; clipped yearling muttons $11-13.50; old ewes $3.75 to $5, old bucks $4 to $5. Yearling ewes $8.50 to $11 per head, older breeding ewes $6.50 to $11 per head.

35 YEARS AGO

Best slaughter lambs available at Fort Worth again topped at $16, feeders around $12, and "in between" kinds went mostly to packers at $13 to $14.

Cal Suggs of Wellington, Texas, sold 100 heifer yearlings weighing 550 at $23 with 10 out at $22.50 to Seldon Hudson of Groom.

John French of Dalhart sold and delivered 107 steer yearlings weighing about 650 pounds at $23.25 to Elmer Martin of Johnson, Kan.

The W.H. Addington ranch near Medicine Bow, Wyo., recently shipped a 2124 head string of steers to the Omaha market. The yearlings were shipped on a 54 car special Union Pacific train. The shipment was the largest single consignment ever sent to the Omaha market.

George Diedrichsen of Bancroft, Neb., bought 80 choice quality steer yearlings weighing 725 pounds at $25 in the Winner, S.D. area.

A.R. Northcutt of Seneca, N.M., sold 250 heifer and steer calves weighing 444 and 453 at $25 and $27 to Ray Ellsaesser of Sublette, Kan.

30 YEARS AGO

Fifty-nine registered bulls brought an average of $650 each in the 20th annual Concho Hereford Assn. sale at San Angelo. Champion and top selling bull of the offering was J. Supreme Pride 25, a two year-old consigned by Frank Jordan & Son of Mason, which sold to Cecil Meador of Eldorado at $2550. Meador also paid $1075 for FWP Mill Iron B9, consigned by Floyd Prather of Comanche.

Pete Cluck of Gruver bought 89 Hereford coming two year-old bred and open heifers at $150 each in the Brownwood area.

Bill O’Brien of Amarillo sold 629 fed steers weighing 1175 pounds and grading 70 percent choice at $23.60 to a Kansas packer.

Texline Feed Yards sold 247 fed heifers weighing 900 pounds and grading 70 percent choice at $23 delivered to a Tennessee packer.

Bill and Robert Green sold and delivered 1500 mixed breed yearling and two year-old steers weighing 750 pounds at $23 off their ranch at Romero, Texas, to Jack Daly, representing Western Cattle Co. of Dighton, Kan.

Bill Hitson, Santa Rosa, N.M., sold to Edwin Cain, Clovis, 600 mutton lambs weighing 74 pounds at $24.

Kerrick Land & Cattle Co., Kerrick, Texas, sold to an Oklahoma buyer 450 Hereford, Angus and black baldface heifer yearlings weighing 700 pounds at $31.

Ray Smith, Craig, Colo., has contracted 8000 Western Slope fed lambs out of a Northern Colorado feedlot to United Packing Co., Denver, at $28.25 cwt. delivered in the wool, with a 110 pound weight stipulation.

Buddy Major, Magdalena, N.M., bought in the Pie Town, N.M. area 157 Angus mixed calves, heifers weighing 315 pounds at $40, steers weighing 346 at $44.25.

Boyd Colbert, Clovis, bought in the Estancia, N.M. area 350 Hereford and black baldface heifer yearlings weighing 574 pounds at $32.

Mansfield Cattle Co., Vega, sold to a local buyer and delivered 350 Hereford steer calves weighing 463 pounds at $40.

Ethan Labrier, Clayton, N.M., bought from Arthur and George Cain, Logan, N.M., 225 Hereford heifers and steers weighing 400 and 460 pounds at $32 and $38; and also bought in the Logan area 400 Hereford and black baldface heifers and steers weighing 450 and 500 pounds at $32 and $38.

Jim Riffel, Stockton, Kan., bought in the Salina, Kan., area one load of choice native steers weighing 834 pounds at $80.98, also a load of choice cow-calf pairs, cows weighing about 1000 pounds and calves to 200 pounds, at $910 per pair.
