Mexico To Cancel Ban
On Beef From Uruguay

MEXICO CITY —(AP)— Mexico is expected to lift its ban on Uruguayan beef next year, the president of the Uruguayan Rural Association said late last week.

That would allow Uruguay to export 20,000 metric tons of beef to Mexico at the start of 1997, said Gerardo Garcia Pintos, who is accompanying Uruguayan President Julio Maria Sanguinetti on a visit to Mexico.

Mexico had placed strict restrictions on South American beef imports due to fears of hoof-and-mouth disease. It is now expected to lift those restrictions.

Garcia Pintos said an official announcement of the end of the ban should be made in a few days.
