ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 higher across the country last week, instances $2-3 up. Buyers moved more aggressively than in recent weeks to acquire both calves and yearlings, boosting prices. The continued downward movement of corn prices provided encouragement along with an upward move in fed cattle prices in major direct areas to $71 for the majority of sales. CME futures prices for feeders in particular jumped sharply late in the week. The fall run is much in evidence in the southern half of the country, though the northern portion is slow to come to town with most producers still harvesting corn and milo. Although a cold, wet blast hindered progress of some wheat pastures for a couple days, the general trend has pastures improving each day and the first planted pastures nearing the date for turning out cattle. Yearlings over 600 pounds made up only about 33 percent of the week's receipts with the fall calf run in full swing.
