Forage Management
Session Set Dec. 4

STILLWATER, Okla. — Basic principles of high-quality and efficient forage production will be the focus of an afternoon Forage Management College Dec. 4 in Stillwater.

There is no registration charge for the event or the noon lunch. Topics will include:

— Using forage to reduce winter feeding costs.

— Weed management in forage systems.

— Soil resources and how they affect profitability of forage systems.

— How to improve legume use in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service forage specialists in Oklahoma State University's Department of Agronomy will be the discussion leaders. A thorough understanding of the soil-plant-animal interface can enable forage and livestock producers to reduce production costs at a crucial time in the cattle cycle when there is little room for inefficiency, explains forage specialist Larry Redmon.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Stillwater Holiday Inn on Highway 51 West, across from the main OSU Agronomy Research Station. Lunch will be served at noon.

The agenda ends with an open discussion of forage management issues from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.

Midway through the college, there will be an organizational meeting of the Oklahoma Forage and Grazing Council. The statewide organization is open to all forage and livestock producers, regardless of the type or amount of their forage base, Redmon says.

The OFGC will be a state affiliate chapter of the American Forage and Grassland Council.

Additional information about the new organization or the Forage Management College can be obtained from Redmon at (405) 744-9608.
