Trade Mixed Bag This Week
The lamb trade was a mixed affair
this week, higher in some areas and steady in others.
Slaughter lambs were as much as $3-5 higher for the week
in the Midwest but steady in Texas. Feeders held steady
in most areas. Slaughter ewes likewise, remained about
steady.

Ain't it surprising what a good
week can do?
After taking it on the chin for weeks, Plains cattle
feeders bowed up last week and put $2 on the fat market.

October delivery 1425 No. 1 Okie and crossbred steers to
weigh 750 pounds at $81, also 600 similar steers to weigh
800 at $80, and 700 No. 1 Okie and crossbred heifers to

Slaughter steers and heifers were
$2-3 higher last week in Texas Panhandle and Western
Oklahoma feedlot trading.

Feeder steers and heifers were
$2-4 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $3 lower. Reciepts
totaled 902 head.

Count Down Two Percent In USDAs Mid-Year Inventory
Cattle industry analysts have been saying for
several months that stockmen appeared to be rebuilding
cow herds; the liquidation phase of the latest cattle
cycle has ended prematurely, they warned, and recent
favorable feeder cattle prices could be short-lived as
numbers climb again following one of the shortest cycles
in history.

Total red meat production under
federal inspection last week was estimated at 809.7
million pounds, .1 percent below last week and 1.2
percent below the same week last year.

On Feed Up 17 Percent In Seven Main Feeding States
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter July 1 in the
seven leading feeding states totaled 7.68 million head,
up 17 percent from the previous year but one percent
below July 1, 1995.

Superior Livestock Auction offered
more than 110,000 head of cattle in a special three-day
sale in Denver.

Domestic wool trading was typically slow for the last two
weeks with prices remaining steady on the limited trading
done.

totaled 1279 head.

Sheep And Goats Lower At Goldthwaite
All represented sheep and goat classes were reported
lower; feeder lambs were $2-3 lower in a limited test,
slaughter ewes steady to $2 lower while bucks held
steady.

San Saba, Mason Cattle Strong
Feeder steers and heifers were steady to strong in San
Saba, Mason and Brownwood, some yearling steers $2-6
higher, slaughter cows steady, bulls $1-3 lower, stock
cows steady to as much as $5 higher.
