45 YEARS AGO

Henry Coffield of Marfa last week shipped 290 plain two year-old grass fat steers from his ranch in Montana that averaged slightly over 1200 pounds each. The steers were shipped from Texas two years ago weighing 511 pounds.

Mrs. Joyce Williams of Lovington, New Mexico, is reported to have sold around 100 steer yearlings weighing around 550 pounds to Kansas buyers for immediate delivery at $27.50 per cwt.

Pete Ainsworth of Colorado City has sold 1200 mixed whiteface lambs and 1000 straight five year-old ewes from the Spade ranch. The lambs reportedly sold at $18.50 per cwt., the ewes at $8 each to a buyer at Coleman, Texas.

Bob Rankin of Abilene last week delivered 127 mixed calves to Tom Donahue of Sweetwater at 29 and 30 cents; the heifers weighing 328, the steers 368. Rankin cut back the heavier heifers to keep. The calves went to Kansas feeders.

George Jones of Marfa last week bought 1000 mixed whiteface lambs at Presidio at 18 cents a pound for delivery this week.

40 YEARS AGO

Max Maez & Son of Springer, N.M., have sold 200 mixed Hereford calves for Oct. 10 delivery at $23.50 for heifers and $26.50 for steers to Mogote Cattle Co., Wagon Mound, N.M.

Harvey Martin of San Angelo this week sold 900 mutton lambs weighing around 75 pounds at $19.50 for shipment to Panhandle grass.

George Cator of Ione, N.M., sold 90 cows and calves, five year-olds of TO breeding, at $200 per pair to Gilbert Childers of Dalhart, delivered Sept. 19.

Jeter Pruitt of Lovington, N.M., sold 100 cows and calves, four to five years old, at $200 per pair and delivered them Sept. 19 to a Brownwood, Texas buyer. The cows were described as weighing about 900 pounds and the calves around 325 pounds.

Surry Roberts of Amistad, N.M., sold 42 steer yearlings weighing around 800 pounds at $20.50 for Oct. 5 delivery to N.C. Crites, Clayton, N.M.

The USDA rates Texas range and pasture conditions average or above in all areas of the state except in South Texas. The Edwards Plateau needs rain for winter forage.

Sheep and lamb receipts at 12 markets Monday totaled 41,500 head compared with 39,700 a week ago and 52,000 a year ago. Hog receipts totaled 82,500 this week, 60,500 Monday of last week and 73,200 a year ago.

Biggs Horn of Amarillo sold 95 steer yearlings weighing 830 pounds at $24.50 and delivered them to Lloyd Farris of Dimmitt.

Dick Garner, Plainview, bought 118 feeder steers weighing 741 pounds at $25.50 from the Texas Order Buying Co., Amarillo.

Triplett & Bruington Cattle Co., Monmouth, Ill., bought 600 steer calves from Jack Renfro’s TO Ranch at Raton, N.M. These were bought through R.C. Cline of Amarillo.

Davidson Feed Pens, Pecos, sold two loads of mostly good 725 pound heifers and 225 mostly good 750 pound heifers at $26 to a Houston packer.

Limon Feedlot, Limon, Colo., sold 130 heifers weighing 950 at $26.75 to National Foods, Denver, f.o.b. the plant.

Easley Feed Yards, Hereford, sold 76 steers weighing 1000 and grading 30 percent choice at $26.25 to a local packer.

Movement of lambs is in full swing in Colorado, where most choice and fancy 69-80 pound range spring lambs sold at $23-23.30, one load of 71 pound blackfaces at $23.90, and a few 75-85 pounders at $22.50-23.20.

Jack Funderburg of Amarillo sold 110 Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers weighing 501 pounds net at $26.75 delivered to Friona Feed Yards.

All hogs and pigs in the 10 major producing states on Sept. 1 totaled 41.6 million head, 12 percent below a year ago and 14 percent below Sept. 1 1980. This is the lowest Sept. 1 inventory for these states since 1977.
