S. Korea Ends Ban
On Nebraska Beef
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) South Korea has lifted
its embargo against Nebraska beef.
Nebraska State Agriculture Director Larry Sitzman said
Monday that the South Korean government has decided to
allow shipments of Nebraska beef into the country. He
said 200 tons of beef held at a port in South Korea since
last month will be permitted to enter.
No Nebraska beef had been allowed into South Korea
since last September after E. coli bacteria was detected
on the outside of frozen and unsliced beef shipped by
Nebraska-based IBP Inc. The company also shipped the beef
that will now be permitted into the Asian country.
South Korea, a major importer of U.S. beef, also
expanded tests for Nebraska and other American beef after
its quarantine experts detected E. coli on the IBP Inc.
beef in September. A similar test in the United States
would not be considered a problem because the bacteria
was not detected in ground beef where it can be more
difficult to eradicate.
