45 YEARS AGO

Dee Graham of Amarillo bought two loads of yearling and two year-old feeder steers from Lloyd Otten of Clovis at $20.25 straight across for shipment to the Corn Belt.

Frank Martin of Dimmitt, Texas, bought two loads of three and four year-old cows in the Clayton, New Mexico area at 16 cents per pound early this month; a few of the cows had calves and the rest were heavy springers.

Whitfield and Johnson, of San Angelo and Melvin, have sold 4700 mixed lambs for early March delivery off fields in the Brady area at 19 cents per pound to northern feeders.

Lem Jones of Junction has bought 285 cows, about 200 with calves, from Joe Clayton of Ozona at $140 to $175 each, depending on age and size of the calves.

Lee Merrill of Clovis sold 130 Angus-Hereford crossbred steers weighing 1040 pounds gross to Neuhauf Packing Company of Dallas at $23.75. These were delivered out of Merrill's feedlots February 4; Merrill said the steers gained an average of 2.88 pounds daily.

40 YEARS AGO

J.D. Hance of Clovis bought, from John Jarrott of Lubbock, 260 heifer calves averaging about 450 pounds at $17, February 11 delivery, on order for California buyers.

J.M. Crews of Childress, Texas, is reported to have sold 1000 steer yearlings, delivered off wheat pasture January 28, at 20 cents a pound.

Jess Kuykendall of Happy, Texas, last week sold one load of steer calves at $20.50 to Roy N. Byrd of Canyon for immediate delivery.

Oldham County Cattle Company of Vega, Texas, sold 135 three year-old cows with 33 calves on them at $135 per head to G.W. Clark of Amarillo.

A Hereford shown by Dayton Crenwelge, 16 year-old Fredericksburg FFA youth, was grand champion of the Houston Fat Stock Show last week. The steer sold for $12,500 to Edgar Brown, banker and rancher of Orange, Texas.

35 YEARS AGO

Rio Bravo Cattle Co., Laredo, completed shipment of 1074 head of crossbred Mexican steer yearlings weighing about 650 at $20 to a West Coast feeder. Bill Martin of the firm reported selling several strings of crossbred steers weighing 350-400 at $23-24.50 to western buyers.

Ed Crabtree of Conlin, Texas, sold 103 steers described as plain quality, weighing 655 pounds at $152.50 per head and delivered to a Kansas City buyer.

During the week ended Jan. 31, a total of 13,634 stocker and feeder steers weighing over 500 pounds sold through 10 leading terminal markets for an average cost of $24.06; during the same week last year, 15,396 head sold for an average of $23.03.

Texas now ranks seventh in the nation as a cattle feeding state. The USDA reported 430,000 cattle and calves on feed in the state as of Jan. 1, or 33 percent more than a year ago.

Owen Bros., San Saba, sold and delivered 245 Angus heifers with first calves at $250 per pair to Clemson Development Corp., Stockton, Calif.

Wilbur Bryant, Hartley, Texas, sold 173 Angus, black baldface and a few Hereford steer yearlings weighing about 650 pounds at $26.50 to Ward Howard of Kansas City, Kan.

Bob Hulett of Amarillo sold 703 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 591 at $27 and delivered them to a feedlot at Hereford.

Benny Taylor of Arch, N.M., sold 62 Hereford mixed calves weighing 361 and 380 pounds at $26 and $32 to Boyd Colbert of Clovis.

Cluck Cattle Co. at Dimmitt sold 99 steers weighing 1030 and grading 70 percent choice at $26 to a Texas packer.

Moody Farms & Feedlots at Pampa sold one load of good 740 pound short fed heifers at $24 to a Texas packer.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 634 million pounds, seven percent above the previous week and little changed from a year ago.

West Texas grainfields continue to yield up modest numbers of feeder lambs, most of them heavy at 90-110 pounds. In direct trade, a common price is $90 to 100 pounds, 50 cents cwt. off for each extra pound.

Direct lamb trading was limited in Texas, a few lots bringing $72-74. In Montana 95 pound feeders moved direct at $75, California termed lambs $72-72.50, and in Arizona they brought $72.50-74.
