Ellison Brothers of Cherokee, Texas, last week sold 1200 choice young ewes, two year-olds with a few threes on them, with lambs at side to L.F. Sneed of San Angelo at $20 per pair for May 10 to 20 delivery out of the wool.

A.M. Harkey of Mason last week bought 368 Hereford yearling steers for R.G. Gribble of Crowell, Texas, at 24 cents a pound. These steers, bought from various growers in Mason County, were shipped at Brady Saturday and averaged around 500 pounds.

Dannie Whitehead of Lubbock recently bought several strings of choice dehorned yearlings, natives of the Lovington, New Mexico area, for shipment to a Kansas City feeder. Included were 92 steers at $25.50 from G.D. Graham, 96 at $25 from J.T. Easley, and 25 at $25 from Burns Hereford Farms. The steers averaged about 415 pounds.

Kothman Brothers of Mason last week sold 1400 mixed blackface lambs to A.E. Neal of San Angelo for May delivery out of the wool at 18 cents a pound.

40 YEARS AGO

Fred Fuqua of Tascosa, Texas, bought 53 yearling heifers weighing 446 pounds at $27 and received them March 25 from Caskey & Foley, Amarillo.

J.L. Jackson of Pampa sold 138 heifer yearlings weighing 655 pounds at $25 and delivered them recently off wheat pasture to buyers there.

Pecos Valley Livestock Commission Co., Roswell, N.M., recently sold 300 ewe lambs weighing near 85 pounds at $23.50 per head to a Montrose, Colo. buyer.

Ted Waldhauser of Clovis, N.M., bought 75 Angus mixed calves for October delivery at $30 straight across from Bob Vineyard, Clovis. These calves, out of purebred cows, are expected to weigh near 500 pounds at delivery.

Dick Buckles, Stratford, Texas, sold 180 Angus and Hereford heifers weighing 550 pounds at $23.50 to Colorado feeders.

In New Mexico, ewes and lambs off farms comprise a larger percentage of offerings; good young pairs are quoted up to $16 in the Roswell area, good aged ewes with lambs $9 to $11.

Burley Henson of Boise City, Okla., sold 162 feeder steers weighing 750 pounds at $22.75 and delivered them to Colorado feeders.

Carl and Pat McDowell of Dumas sold 500 short yearling steers weighing 550 pounds and described as good to choice thin Herefords at $27 to Iowa buyers.

Ralph Britten of Groom bought 114 mixed breed steers weighing 525 pounds at $23.25 and received them from Ralph Phillips of Olustee, Okla.

Bob Gaylor bought from Chick Northcutt of Silverton, one load of steer yearlings weighing 501 at $25.50, delivered.

M-E Cattle Co., Clayton, N.M., bought 165 three year-old Hereford springer cows and four registered Hereford bulls of the same age at $207 per head straight across near Clayton.

Parker Cattle Co., Wayside, sold 525 steers weighing 1050-1150 and grading about 70 percent choice at $42.25 on grade and yield basis to the Texas Meat Packers plant at Lubbock.

Samuels & Co. of Brownwood bought 990 85-pound fed lambs at Bandera from Campbell & Inc. of San Antonio at $27.50 delivered and weighed in Brownwood.

Red meat production for Texas totaled 319 million pounds during February, up 11 percent from a year ago but down two percent from January, the Texas Agricultural Statistics Service said.
