45 YEARS AGO

Guy Gearhart of Post, Texas, is reported to have bought, from Weldon Johnson of Dermott, 100 Angus heifers and 150 Angus steers averaging 500 pounds at $18 cwt., April 28 delivery, to ship to Kansas grass.

Blan Brunson of Channing, Texas, is reported to have sold to Leo Singer and Dee Graham of Amarillo, 400 mixed yearlings and delivered them last week at $18 and $21.50; the heifers averaged 425, the steers 450 pounds.

Lloyd Rentfro of Jericho, Texas, is reported to have sold 45 cows and calves to Joe Whatley of Amarillo at $165 per pair; the cows were three to five years old.

Jack Canning of Eden, one of Texas' most active lamb buyers this year, is receiving around 10,000 oldcrop lambs which he bought earlier in Central Texas. Lambs fat enough and good enough are selling this week at 20 cents a pound.

Ranching in Mexico has as many problems as in Texas, and then some, says A.B. Whitehead of Del Rio. He's been raising cattle in the state of Coahuila for 35 years and has one of the biggest and best herds in the country.

Russell Ellsaesser of Sublette, Kan., and Buck Cone of Amarillo sold 77 springer cows to Richard Addington of Elkhart, Kan., at $215 per head, and 42 cows and calves at $245 to Carroll Lewis, Clarendon, Texas; all were sold for delivery this week.

Troy Whatley, Tucumcari, N.M., sold 50 steer calves weighing 440 pounds at $35 and delivered them last week to a buyer from Liberal, Kan.

Bert Kincaid of Fort Stockton has contracted around 3000 Rambouillet type mutton lambs from a New Mexico seller for November delivery at 20 cents per pound.

Charlie Dysart of Clayton, N.M. sold 113 steer calves, described as fancy quality and weighing 321 pounds, at $37.50 cwt., f.o.b. El Paso, to Shirley Sox of Amarillo, delivered this week.

Things are looking up in the horse business. Prices for ordinary jugheads are three or four times as high as 10 years ago. Good ones, while scarce and readily salable at $300 to $500 each, haven't gone up much in recent years, dealers say.

Jack Dean of Willard sold 70 aged cows with 35 calves on them to Tom Mobley of Albuquerque at $165 per head.

Gifford Bros., Marlin, sold 265 heifers weighing 600-625 pounds at $23 to Nebraska.

The Sadler Ranch at Clayton, N.M., sold about 200 cows and calves at $235 to a Kansas buyer.

Henry Cone of Canyon bought 64 good quality Hereford steer yearlings averaging 580 pounds at $25 from John Hardaway, Canyon.

Arthur Truitt, Amarillo, bought 122 steer yearlings described as good and choice Herefords weighing 560 pounds at $25.75 and received them from Miller & Eastburn of Amarillo.

Bogle & Bogle, Clovis, N.M., sold 312 mostly choice 800 pound heifers at $25 and 16 mostly choice 1000 pound steers at $25.85 to New Mexico packers.

John V. White's Guadalupe Mountain clip of 5700 pounds of ewe wool brought 61 1/8 cents and his 700 pounds of lambs wool topped the sale at 63 1/2.

Monfort Packing Co., Greeley, Colo., bought about 7000 oldcrop shorn lambs with No. 1-2 pelts and weighing 105-115 at $26.75 in Colorado. The lambs were discounted 10 cents per pound above 110.

Jess Burner, El Paso, sold 2500 mixed breed steers weighing about 450 pounds at $26 off Arizona ranges to a California buyer.

Wallace Lockmiller, Clovis, N.M., sold 500 No. 1 Okie steers weighing about 650 pounds at $27 to a Clovis buyer.

Only 13,324 cattle entered Texas from Mexico last month, the Texas Animal Health Commission reported; 280,327 cattle and 23,464 sheep were shipped from Texas to other states during the month.

Drouth conditions reminiscent of the 1950s are occurring throughout a large part of West Texas. Most rain gauge recordings this year have totaled only an inch or two and most of that has been in one or two-tenth increments.
