Loose Ends

The Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic is set to kick off its 20th anniversary May 7 at the Brownwood Coliseum. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 8:30 a.m. There is no registration fee.

Texas House of Representatives member Bob Turner of Coleman County begins the morning session with a look at legislative issues and updates and how they will affect cattlemen over the coming years. Turner is followed by Tom Woodward of Decatur-based Broseco Ranch. He will suggest a number of techniques producers can apply to their herds to glean more dollars per cow.

Other morning sessions include production lending for cow-calf operations and a cattle outlook by economist Dr. Ernie Davis.

After a free catered lunch, the program will cover topics such as carcass quality management and stocking rates.

A three-day, two-night beef and wheat tour sponsored by the Callahan, Brown, Fisher, Jones, Nolan, Shackelford and Taylor County Extension offices is set for May 11-13.

Tour stops include the Texas Tech Animal Science Department, a commercial feedyard and a tour of the Excel beef packing plant. Wheat-related tour stops include the Bushland Research & Extension Center and the Panhandle Milling Company flour mill.

The tour departs Abilene at noon, May 11, and returns the afternoon of May 13. Cost of the tour is $100 and includes transportation on a charter bus, lodging, and three meals. Registration deadline is May 8. Further information is available from any of the sponsoring county Extension offices.

The Center for Grazinglands and Ranch Management is offering a workshop, "Management of Grazinglands in Northern Mexico and Southern Texas," June 25-26 in Laredo. The program will be presented in English and Spanish.

Topics to be discussed include range ecosystems, integrated resource management, drouth strategy, pasture forage production, and planned grazing.
