A PARTY
ATMOSPHERE usually surrounds the kickoff
of the Texas and New Mexico finewool sale season,
but this years version was more funerary in
nature as prices tumbled from already low levels.
In fact, the sale pictured here in Del Rio never
officially happened; some growers opted to accept
the disappointing bids on an individual basis,
but warehouse directors canceled the formal
offering. Details of the opening Texas sales
appear elsewhere in this issue. |
Lamb
Prices Follow Higher Meat Prices
Lamb carcasses took a $5-7 jump in price late last
week, and fat and feeder lamb prices moved upward this
week. Slaughter lambs were a couple of dollars higher
while feeders were around $5-7 higher.

Cattle Decline $1 Again Wednesday After Holding Off
Plains feedlots held out against relentlessly
lower bids as long as they could, but the breaking point
came early Wednesday afternoon.

The domestic wool market took a dive last week as
Texas warehouses were preparing to offer the
seasons traditional first round of sealed-bid
sales. Growers and warehousemen knew that the market was
off considerably from last year, but there was still hope
for 90 cent wool.

Seeking Funds To Begin Screwworm Plant Construction
The Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation,
which spearheaded and still closely monitors screwworm
eradication, is trying to raise $250,000 over the next 60
days to cover "up-front expenses" for a sterile
fly production plant to be constructed at Panama City and
leased back to the U.S.-Panama Screwworm Commission.

Changes In PRCA Standings; Murray Still Leads All-Around
Ty Murray, Stephenville, Texas, continues his lead in pro
rodeos all-around competition with winnings to date
of $72,564. He is followed by Trevor Brazile, Decatur,
Texas, with $51,038; Herbert Theriot, Poplarville, Miss.,
$37,230; J.P. Wickett, Muldrow, Okla., $28,932; and Todd
Arthur, Waller, Texas, $25,458.

Ranch Rodeo Set For June 5-7
Wild Horse Prairie Days, billed as "a
celebration of the legendary Texas working cowboy,"
is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, June 5-7, at the
Haskell Rodeo Arena here.

Feeder lambs sold $5-7 higher this week, slaughter lambs
firm in a light test and slaughter ewes $2-4 higher. Two
day receipts totaled 14,802 head.

Saba, Brownwood Mason Feeders Mixed
Feeder steers and heifers sold mixed in Mason,
Brownwood and San Saba last week, buyers very selective,
with choice offerings steady to $1 higher, medium quality
$2-4 lower, plainer and fatter $5 lower, and roping
calves $5-8 higher.

Feeder Steers, Heifers Traded Lower
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $3 lower,
the greatest decline on fleshy or plain offerings,
slaughter cows and bulls fully steady, pairs steady to
$35 lower. Receipts totaled 1546 head.

City Feeder Cattle Trade Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows
steady to $1 lower, bulls steady, pairs $25 lower.
Receipts totaled 610 head.
Most
Abilene Cattle Prices Termed Higher
Feeder steers and heifers were mostly steady with
600-800 pound heifers $2 higher, slaughter cows $1
higher, bulls $2-3 higher, cows with calves $30 higher.
Receipts totaled 2310 head.

Conditions Prevalent In Texas
West Texas is officially in a drouth. The National
Weather Service defines a drouth as two months with less
than 50 percent of normal rainfall. That puts almost the
entire state in a drouth.

Feeder lambs sold $2-3 higher, slaughter ewes and
bucks steady; slaughter Angora goats steady; stock
Spanish nannies fully steady, slaughter muttons and
billies $2-3 lower, other slaughter classes $6-10 lower.
Receipts totaled 8600 head.
Better
Llano Feeder Cattle Trade Steady
Feeder steers sold mostly steady to $1 lower,
plain kinds $2-3 lower, better heifers steady, plain
kinds $1-2 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 higher.
Receipts totaled 506 head.

Cattle Sales Called Lower, Active
Feeder steers and heifers sold lower, slaughter cows and
bulls lower. Receipts totaled 1363 head.
Most
Lampasas Feeder Cattle Prices Lower
Feeder steers and heifers sold $3-5 lower, cows
and bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1113 head.
Milano
Cattle Prices Called Mostly Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter
cows firm to $1 higher, bulls steady. Receipts totaled
1003 head.
Fredericksburg
Feeder Steer Prices Decline
Feeder steers sold $3-5 lower, heifers steady, slaughter
cows and bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1729 head.
