45 YEARS AGO

Lem Jones of Junction sold a carload of straight four year-old ewes leading crossbred blackface lambs weighing around 50 pounds to Virginia buyers at $19 a pair.

Aubrey Grouskay of Phoenix sold, to Bill Munch of Phoenix, about 120 light crossbred Brahman calves topped out of 300 head at 17 cents per pound.

Owen Parks of San Saba has contracted from Buford Mays, also of San Saba, 200 mixed Angus calves for delivery August 1 at 18 cents a pound straight across. Parks said the calves are expected to be fat when cut off their mothers for delivery.

Guy Birdwell of Snyder sold 100 steer yearlings about two weeks ago to a Mr. Williams of Philip, South Dakota, at 19 cents per pound; they averaged 570 pounds.

From the Classifieds: For Sale — 50 good quality three year-old Hereford cows and calves, one mark and brand, dehorned, price $150. Dink Johnson, Mertzon rancher, delivered an amazingly big lamb crop last year, and now he's done it again. He sold and delivered 900 lambs averaging 80 pounds (450 head went as fats) off 600 ewes to Mid-West Feed Yards, San Angelo.

Eldon Vance of Panhandle sold three loads of heifer yearlings for June 20-July 1 delivery to an Amarillo buyer at $25.50 through Ab Wright, Amarillo; these are expected to average near 650 pounds.

Elton Green and J.D. Hance of Clovis, N.M., recently sold and delivered, to a Fort Sumner buyer, 125 cows and calves at $250 per pair; the cows were three to sixes, described as weighing about 1100 pounds.

The Bank of Belle Fourche, S.D. reports 35,000 pounds of wool sold there in odd lots recently at 38 cents and 32,000 at 40 cents; also 2000 fleeces at 40 cents.

J.T. Easley of Lovington, N.M., sold one load of fed bulls weighing 1200 pounds at $22.50, delivered this week.

Leonard Freis, Amarillo, bought 50 heifer yearlings weighing 568 pounds at $22.75 and received them from Fred Hagerman of Claude, Texas.

J.S. Avis of Hart, Texas, sold 96 steer yearlings averaging 750 pounds at $22.50 delivered to a local buyer.

Hereford Feed Lots, Hereford, Texas, sold 40 mixed breed fed steers, about one-third of them choice and the rest good, weighing 1070 pounds, at $21.50 to Swift & Co., Clovis, delivered.

Bob Bell of Clayton, N.M., sold 138 good age Hereford cows and calves at $200 per pair through the D.A.M. Land & Cattle Co., Clayton, to a Douglas, Wyo. buyer.

E.G. Schuhart of Dalhart sold 300 short age heifer yearlings averaging 475 pounds at $25 and delivered them to a Kansas buyer.

Wayne May, Brownwood, sold about 800 choice Angus mixed calves weighing about 450-475 pounds, at $26.75 and $30.75 to a Cornbelt buyer.

L.W. Farris, Hart, Texas, bought 100 Hereford and black baldface heifers weighing 550 at $25.25 in the Crossroads, N.M. area.

Chow Tex Feed Yards, Muleshoe, sold 379 good 725-740 pound heifers at $25.50 to a South Texas packer.

Limon Feedlot at Limon, Colo., sold 940 heifers weighing 940 and grading 90 percent choice at $25.75 and 33 mixed good and choice weighing 1025 at $25.60 to a Pueblo packer.

Total red meat production under federal inspection during last week's holiday-shortened slaughter period was an estimated 576 million pounds, 16 percent below the previous week and four percent below the same week a year ago.
