45 YEARS AGO

Lee Fawcett of Sonora has sold 2500 to 3000 lambs to Walton Kothmann of Menard for delivery this weekend at $21 for the fats and $14.50 for the feeders, f.o.b. the Sonora stockpens. Fawcett estimated 25 to 30 percent of the lambs are fat.

Buren Ware of Amarillo sold 61 mixed calves weighing 409 pounds at $14 straight across to Nebraska buyers, June 19 delivery.

Cliff Wimberly of Vega, Texas, is reported to have sold 100 good young cows with big calves on them to Kenneth Cook, also of Vega, at $137.50 per pair.

Marshall Cator of Sunray, Texas, sold 125 heifer yearlings weighing 610 pounds at $15.50 to Dick Brummett of Amarillo, June 19 delivery.

Jess Kuykendall of Happy, Texas, sold 15 registered Hereford three and four year-old cows and calves at $270 per pair to Bill Price of the Rocking A Ranch, Lubbock, June 16 delivery. He also sold a 17 month-old registered bull at $500.

40 YEARS AGO

Fred Ball of Mid-West Feed Yards, San Angelo, this week received about 1500 lambs from Keith Mitchell of Fort Stockton at $21 for fats, $19 for feeder muttons, and $21 for ewe lambs. They average near 72 pounds delivered in Fort Stockton.

Reed Curtis of Amarillo sold one load of fed heifers averaging 765 pounds at $25.75, delivered this week to Pinkney Packing Co., Amarillo.

Quintin Issacs, Canadian, Texas, sold about 150 two year-old steers for Sept. 1-15 delivery, seller's option, at $24 to an out-of-state buyer. These cattle are expected to weigh near 1100 pounds at delivery.

Gilbert Childers of Dalhart has bought about 500 steer calves for Oct. 10-15 delivery from the J.T. Sneed Jr. Estate near Dumas at $33 cwt. This is a reputation string of Hereford calves, expected to weigh 400 to 425 pounds at delivery.

Leroy Russell, San Angelo, has contracted about 1500 crossbred blackface lambs for fall delivery from Blackstone & Elkins, Barnhart, at $20.50.

Prices received by growers for wool sold during the 1962 marketing year (April 1962-March 1963) averaged 47.7 cents per pound, or 11 percent more than the average of 42.9 cents received during the preceding marketing year, says the USDA.

Roy Martin, San Angelo, bought 1200 blackface lambs, all feeders except 272 head, at $17 from Aldwell & Johnson of Barnhart, and about 600 head at the same price from L.E. Johnson at Christoval.

Bob Hood of Liberal, Kan., bought 395 long age steer calves averaging 490 pounds at $28.40 and received them from Ferol Smith, Des Moines, N.M.

Paul Newman of Lubbock sold one load of four year-old Angus cows with 250-pound calves at side at $300 per pair to C.B. Boverie, Lubbock.

Average price in the "native" or "fleece wool" states during the past season was 47.8 cents per pound. In the 11 western states, Texas and South Dakota, the average price was 47.7 cents.

Dewey Gann of Springer, N.M., sold and delivered 143 head of seven year-old Angus cows and calves at $215 per pair to a Clayton buyer; Gann said these cattle were sold on account of dry range and shortage of stock water. His ranch is 12 miles east of Springer.

Vann-Roach Cattle Co., Fort Worth, bought 550 top Okie steer yearlings weighing 675 pounds at $25.50 in the Dalhart area.

Union County Feedlot, Clayton, N.M., sold 43 steers weighing 960 pounds, grading 85 percent choice, at $27.25 to an Alabama packer.

Swift & Co. has bought about 1600 old ewes at two San Angelo yards at $7.50-7.75.

Sterett Hawes of Springer, N.M., said this week that cattle on his ranch are walking as much as 2½ miles to water; 40 waterholes on the ranch are dry.

Swift & Co., Chino, Calif., bought about 1000 Humboldt County, Calif. clipped lambs weighing 100 pounds at $37 delivered and two loads out of Rosebud, Ore. weighing 105 pounds at $37.50 delivered with guaranteed yield.

Continental Cattle Co., Amarillo and Dodge City, bought in the Portales, N.M. area 600 No. 1 and few No. 2 Okie steers weighing 675 pounds at $51.

Texas confirmed screwworm cases totaled 73 as of Wednesday, 10 new counties joining the list of hosts during the past two weeks. Arizona has now 1099 cases, New Mexico 213 and California 27.

The Andy Smith Ranch took the first benefit Ranch Cowboy Roundup at San Angelo, amassing 31 team points compared to 17 for the tying runners-up.
