WILD HORSES
are playing havoc on western ranges where their
sheer numbers have overwhelmed forage resources,
but under more controlled conditions their
presence has proven a boon to some stockmen.

grass on the John Hughes ranch near Bartlesville,
Okla., where a contract to help the government
board some of its excess equines is a welcome
supplement to none-too-shiny cattle income. |

Prices Continue Sharp Decline

Fed Cattle $1 Lower; Losses Grind Feeders Down
Like a player in some boot-wearing version of a
Greek tragedy, the cattle business seems to be trudging
slowly but inexorably toward disaster, unable to affect
its own destiny. Both fat and feeder cattle moved another
step closer to the cliff this week.
