45 YEARS AGO

Roy Henderson of Ozona this week sold and delivered 962 crossbred blackface lambs to Walton Kothmann of Menard at $15.50 cwt.; the lambs averaged 65 pounds delivered at Brackettville from Henderson's ranch there.

D.P. Smith and Son of Llano this week were shipping about 500 mixed calves to Corn Belt feeders. These are early calves weighing in the neighborhood of 450 pounds, and were bought recently in the Mason and Llano areas at 15 to 17 cents per pound.

Carroll Farmer, with Foley-Allen Commission Company, Fort Worth, bought the Foster lambs at Sterling City, around 2000 mixed whitefaces, at 14 cents on the stockers and 20 cents a pound on the fat lambs.

Frank Greenwood of Del Rio this week sold 2400 mixed whiteface lambs to Jimmy Mills, also of Del Rio.

Lee Merill of Clovis last week sold 300 cows and calves to Sam Wakyou of Nevada at $130 a pair. The cows were straight three year-olds and the calves averaged around 200 pounds.

40 YEARS AGO

Fred and Charlie Marshall of Canyon, Texas and Arch, N.M., bought 115 mixed calves expected to weigh around 400 pounds at $29.50 and $31.50 for Oct. 20 delivery near Carlsbad, N.M.

Ray Barber of Amarillo bought, for W.S. Cline Cattle Co., 60 mixed calves from Walter Rose of Olton, Texas, at $28 and $30 for October delivery.

Cleo Norwood of Amarillo sold 1000 heifer yearlings to Cliff Augustine of Lamar, Colo., at $24.90 for October delivery; these are located near Magdelena, N.M., and are expected to weigh 575-600 pounds at delivery.

L.M. McClure of Tescott, Kan., this week bought 450 steer yearlings for Sept. 1 delivery off Kansas grass at $25 from E.D. Webster & Sons, San Angelo. These cattle are expected to weigh close to 800 pounds at delivery.

Jack Drake, San Angelo, bought and received three loads of stocker lambs from local speculators at $20. He also got one load of 79 pounders from Charles Raney of San Angelo, and another from Street Whitley of Mertzon.

Joe Schuman of Dumas, Texas, sold 100 medium quality feeder heifers weighing 580 pounds at $22.75 and delivered them to Tommy Griffin of Dumas.

Ike Wiggins of Wagon Mound, N.M., sold 1000 good and choice steer yearlings for October delivery at $24 on 200 head of heavier cattle and $25 on the balance, which he wintered himself in that area. These will weigh about 675 pounds.

The estimated number of cattle and calves on feed in the 28 major feeding states as of July 1 totaled 6,830,000 head, the USDA said this week. This was 11 percent more than a year ago.

The champion pen of Angus steers was comprised of 10 head consigned by Clark & Dean of Rocksprings. These went to E.D. Webster & Sons, San Angelo, at $32.40 cwt., averaging 412 pounds.

G.E. Tannahill of Friona sold 67 good and choice fed steers weighing 980 pounds at $24 and delivered them to Wayne Yocum, Hereford.

Feeder lambs dominated trade in West Texas, where most all weights sold at $22.50-23.50, a few light stockers up to $24.

R.P. Crabtree, Boise City, Okla., sold 99 mostly choice 1050 pound steers at $27.50 out of Boise City Feed Yards to a Kansas packer.

Wallace Johnston, San Angelo, bought about 2500 feeder lambs delivered into San Angelo at $23-23.50, mostly from farther west. These were blackface and Columbia crosses bought on order for Cornbelt feeders.

Davidson Feed Pens, Pecos, sold 312 mostly good 700 pound heifers at $26 and 200 mostly good 1000-1025 pound steers at $26.75 to South Texas packers.

F.J. Hommel, Clarendon, sold a load of mostly choice 1050 pound steers at $27.25 to Swift & Co., Fort Worth.

Cattle on feed in the 23 major feeding states totaled 12,732,000 head on July 1, up two percent from a year earlier. The number on feed in the seven states reported monthly was estimated at 9,491,000 head, four percent above a year ago.

Hubert Frizzell, Lockney, has sold 4800 fed lambs weighing 95 pounds in No. 2 pelts at $38.75 f.o.b. the feedlot to a San Angelo packer.

Hoxie Cattle Co., Hoxie, Kan., bought and received 100 choice Angus steers weighing 480 pounds at $62 delivered from San Saba, Texas.

Total red meat production under federal inspection during last week's holiday shortened period was an estimated 549 million pounds, 14 percent below the previous week and three percent below the same period a year ago.
