45 YEARS AGO

John Higgins of Texline sold, a couple of weeks ago, about 450 mixed Angus calves at $18 and $20 to Joe Smith and Son of Dalhart for October 20-25 delivery. These are choice quality calves and are expected to weigh 450 to 500 pounds at delivery.

Mid-West Feed Yards of San Angelo this week bought a load of good quality four year-old ewes at $8 per head, and some similar solidmouths at $7 per head. The firm also bought several small strings of feeder lambs at $15 to $16.

Larkin Renick of Llano is reported to have bought the Buster Poole and Sloan Sisters mixed calves at San Saba for August 15 delivery at 20 cents straight across. These are choice quality calves, expected to weigh around 450 pounds at delivery.

Max Riley of Roswell bought two cars of old packer ewes from Armstrong Farms of Roswell at four cents per pound.

Roy Harkey, San Angelo commission agent, this week sold 600 mixed whiteface lambs weighing 69 pounds to Jess Stephens of Eden at 16 cents a pound.

40 YEARS AGO

Harvey Martin of San Angelo bought and received this week 1800 blackface fat lambs from Charlie Black of Ozona at $22 cwt.; they averaged 78 pounds.

Bob Glenn of Wellington, Texas, is reported to have sold about 100 heifer yearlings for July 10-15 delivery at $23.50 to Wallace Locke, Amarillo; these are expected to average 550-575 pounds at delivery.

Howard Alford, Lubbock, bought from Henry Lawson there, 290 mixed breed steer yearlings weighing 580 pounds at $23.50, delivered last week. Alford sold, to Durward Lewter of Lubbock, 112 shortfed steers weighing 1083 pounds at $24, also delivered last week.

Reed Curtis of Amarillo sold one load of fed heifers averaging 765 pounds at $25.75, delivered this week to Pinkney Packing Co., Amarillo.

Joe Robinson, Tahoka, Texas, sold 300 mixed calves to Carroll Lewis of Clarendon for fall delivery at $28 and $30, expected to weigh near 475 at delivery.

The 1963 lamb crop totaled 19,695,000 head, reports the USDA. This was three percent less than the 20,315,000 head produced last year.

The T-4 Ranch at Tucumcari, N.M., sold 700 yearling heifers weighing about 650 pounds at $23 to an Amarillo buyer.

Alfred McMurtry of Clarendon sold 1700 steer yearlings averaging about 700 pounds at $24 to an Amarillo buyer.

The nation's calf crop this year is expected to total 41,819,000 head, up two percent from the 1962 crop of 41,026,000 head, and the largest since 1955, the USDA says.

Spring Creek Cattle Co. of Romero, Texas, sold 100 heifer and steer calves averaging a little over 400 pounds at $27 and $29 to an Amarillo buyer.

The 1968 lamb crop in the United States was estimated at 14,472,000 head, down four percent from the 15,040,000 head produced in 1967.

Uvalde Producers Wool & Mohair, Uvalde, sold about 200,000 pounds of original bag non-gradable coarse adult mohair at 35-38 cents per pound.

Hi-Plains Feed Yard, Friona, sold 130 heifers weighing 850 pounds and grading 70-75 percent choice, at $26 to a New Mexico packer.

Spurlock Cattle Co., Panhandle, Texas, sold 272 good 670-680 pound heifers at $26 to Jack Funderburg, Amarillo.

Montana's Big Timber pool of about 6000 feeder lambs was sold for September delivery at sealed bid for $37.22. The Billings auction moved slaughter lambs at $35.75-36.75, feeder lambs $35-36.

The 1978 U. S. lamb crop was estimated by USDA at 8.02 million head, seven percent fewer than in 1977 and 10 percent lower than 1976.

Cattle on feed in 23 states on July 1 totaled 10,920,000 head, up 12 percent from last year and nine percent from 1976.

A Rambouillet ram sold for $9000 at San Angelo in the American Rambouillet Sheep Breeders Assn. 100th anniversary sale. Consigned by Cunningham Sheep Co., Pendleton, Ore., the ram was sold to Ross Appleton, Eden, who operates what he calls the Mortgaged Sheep Co.

Stiles Cattle Co., Cuero, bought in the local area 116 No. 1 crossbred steers weighing 374 pounds at $112.40; 118 No. 1 crossbred heifers weighing 376 at $86.40; 108 similar heifers weighing 404 at $84.70.
