Cattle On Feed Up Two Percent
In Seven Main Feeding States

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter July 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 8.29 million head, up two percent from the same date last year and 19 percent above July 1, 1996.

Seven-state placements for June totaled 1.31 million head, seven percent above June of 1997 and 23 percent above the same period two years ago.

June marketings for the seven states came to 1.73 million head, slightly below those for June of last year but two percent above June 1996.

Other disappearance totaled 51,000 head in June, 16 percent above last year and nine percent above two years ago.

USDA’s broader national tally of feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head showed 9.16 million cattle on feed July 1, up two percent from last year and 17 percent above the same date two years ago.

June placements in the broader count came to 1.56 million, eight percent above June of 1997 and 20 percent above June 1996, net placements 1.49 million. Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 262,000 head; 600-699 pounds 374,000; 700-799 pounds 487,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 440,000.

June marketings in the larger count showed 2.03 million head, slightly below last year but two percent above June of 1996.

Other disappearance totaled 72,000 head, 20 percent greater than last June’s figure and three percent above June 1996.

Statistics for the seven leading states, compared to a year ago:

Cattle on feed: Arizona 200,000 head, up six percent; California 390,000, unchanged; Colorado 880,000, down four percent; Iowa 265,000, down five percent; Kansas 1,870,000, down five percent; Nebraska 1,600,000, up four percent; Texas 2,620,000, up nine percent.

Placements: Arizona 23,000, down 15 percent; California 60,000, up 20 percent; Colorado 140,000, up 12 percent; Iowa 21,000, down 43 percent; Kansas 330,000, down one percent; Nebraska 240,000, up nine percent; Texas 500,000, up 10 percent.

Marketings: Arizona 32,000, down 22 percent; California 40,000, down 20 percent; Colorado 230,000, up 10 percent; Iowa 45,000, down 20 percent; Kansas 440,000, down seven percent; Nebraska 430,000, unchanged; Texas 510,000, up nine percent.
