45 YEARS AGO

Larkin Renick of Llano and Jim Mueller of Mason bought in the last week about 1500 choice mixed calves at San Saba, Mason, Llano and Kerrville, mostly at 20 cents a pound straight across. Mueller reported this week that there is still some inquiry for choice calves but that activity was limited. Some inquiry has been made for cows and calves in that country also, Mueller said.

Bert Kincaid of Ranchers Feed Yards of Fort Stockton has bought around 5000 mixed lambs in the last week for Floyd McComas of Abilene at 15 cents for light lambs and 16 cents for heavier, better lambs. These include lambs from Joe Bynum, Fred Montgomery, Porter Brothers, Frank Perry and others. The lambs weighed from 44 to 56 pounds.

Jess and Conway Kuykendall of Happy, Texas, are reported to have sold 50 three year-old wet cows to Kirk Johnson of Graham at $140 per head.

Leon Wilhelm of Amarillo has bought 40 cows and calves in the Nara Visa, New Mexico area at $135 per pair, July 25 delivery; the calves weighed about 200 pounds.

40 YEARS AGO

Pat Rose Sr., Del Rio, this week delivered about 3000 whiteface feeder mutton lambs to Louis Wardlaw of Shirley Livestock Comm. Co., Fort Worth, at $21 cwt. The lambs were delivered Wednesday at Comstock and were estimated to weigh 80-85 pounds.

Ike Wiggins of Wagon Mound, N.M., recently sold 100 choice yearling steers to a Kansas buyer for October delivery at $28; these are light steers, expected to weigh around 600 pounds at delivery.

Martin Harvick of Ozona recently sold and delivered 729 whiteface yearling ewes at $23.50 per head to B. Henderson of Langtry, Texas. Harvick bought on order 100 good and choice Hereford mixed calves at $29 and $31; these will be delivered around the last of August and will be heavy.

John D. Gray of the Four Drag Ranch at Clifton, Ariz., reports there has been some contracting in eastern Arizona lately; he has sold his calves and yearlings for fall delivery to a Kansas buyer at $24 and $26 for yearlings, which will weigh around 650 pounds; and $30 straight for his calves, expected to average near 400 pounds.

Jack Richardson received an average of $49 per head for 183 Angora billies in his annual sale here last week. Highest price was $310, paid by Miss Phylis Sweeten of Rocksprings.

The Moise Ranch at Santa Rosa, N.M., sold 700 heifer and steer calves expected to average 425-450 pounds at $26 and $28 for Oct. 15 delivery to R.L. Crist of Scott City, Kan.

The Culbertson Ranch at Rosebud, N.M., sold 600 open heifer yearlings averaging about 650 pounds at $160 per head to a Follett, Texas buyer.

Wool shorn and to be shorn in 1963 is estimated at 241,175,000 pounds, grease basis. This is three percent below the 248,538,000 pounds in 1962.

Gooch Feedlots of Dalhart sold 86 plain quality fed steers described as good grade, weighing 1169 pounds, and delivered them at $23.50 to Ed Buddy of Amarillo, buying for Supreme Beef Co., Lubbock.

Shipments of cattle by rail from Texas during June this year totaled 27,135 head compared with 44,262 during the same month last year, the USDA reports.

Bud Layton, Folsom, N.M., bought 125 Hereford mixed calves expected to weigh 400 pounds at $27 and $31 for Oct. 1 delivery in the Clayton, N.M. area.

Randall County Feed Yard, Amarillo, sold 271 steers weighing 1050, grading 75 percent choice, at $27.25-27.50 to Texas packers.

Bogle & Bogle, Clovis, N.M., sold 310 mostly choice 975-1000 pound steers at $27.15 to a New Mexico packer.

C&D Cattle Co., Briscoe, Texas, bought 111 Hereford and Angus steers weighing 721 at $26.75 from E.O. Kelly, Briscoe. They were hauled seven miles and shrunk two percent.

Cattle and Calf numbers in the U.S. are down seven percent from a year ago. USDA said Wednesday the July 1 estimate was 121,575,000 head, down seven percent from 130,195,000 the same date last year.
