Meat Imports Almost
5% Of Domestic Output
WASHINGTON (USDA) Last week 18,052 metric
tons of foreign-produced red meat passed for entry into
the United States, 39.7 billion pounds and the equivalent
of 4.8 percent of domestic production.
Beef passed for entry amounted to 84.4 percent of the
total at 33.6 million pounds, pork 10.3 percent at 4.1
million pounds, and lamb and mutton 4.5 percent at 1.8
million pounds. Veal accounted for less than one percent
and goat meat at 171,600 pounds was also less than one
percent.
U.S. domestic meat production last week was 831.3
million pounds. Beef made up 58.5 percent of the total at
485.9 million pounds, pork 40.5 percent at 337.1 million
pounds, veal half of one percent at 4.1 million pounds,
and lamb and mutton half of one percent at 4.2 million
pounds.
Beef passed for entry amounted to the equivalent of
6.9 percent of domestic production, veal less than one
percent, pork 1.2 percent and lamb and mutton 42.1
percent of domestic production.
