45 YEARS AGO

Roy Henderson of Ozona this week sold 356 young cows with calves to Owen Brothers of San Saba at $160 a pair. The cows range in age from two to four years and the calves weigh from 250 to 375 pounds. The cattle delivered Tuesday from a ranch near Brownwood, where Henderson had them on pasture.

Earl Bailey of Sterling City this week sold 155 mixed calves to Hays & Jackson of San Angelo at 18 cents a pound straight across. The calves weighed 353 pounds on delivery this week.

Lem Jones of Junction this week contracted 700 mixed lambs in the Uvalde area for September delivery at 16 cents a pound.

Mid-West Feed Yards in San Angelo this week bought several strings of fat lambs for shipment to Wilson and Company, Oklahoma City, at $18 to $18.50.

40 YEARS AGO

Louis Wardlaw or Fort Worth (Shirley Commission Co.) continued to be one of the most active buyers of Texas lambs during the past week. Among his purchases were 3000 whiteface mutton lambs at $21 from Ira Deaton & Sons, Sanderson, and a couple of loads from Dick Henderson of Ozona.

Ham Wilbanks of Hereford sold 200 cows and calves and delivered them recently to an out-of-state buyer at $280 per pair; these cows weighed about 1000 pounds and the calves near 300 pounds. He also sold two loads of cows and calves at $235 to Frank Packard of Tulia, delivered last week.

Leroy Hughes and Lloyd Williamson of Dalhart sold 250 yearling heifers expected to weigh near 700 pounds at $24.50 for Sept. 1-15 delivery to Dewitt Dulaney and Rue Wharton of Dalhart.

Bob Hurt of San Angelo bought 1500 whiteface mutton lambs from Hutto Bros., Carta Valley, for delivery this week in Sonora at $21.

Bob Mapes is reported to have sold, off his ranch near Clayton, N.M., 450 steer yearlings expected to weigh 650-675 pounds at $25.50 for mid-October delivery.

Range conditions in Colorado are the poorest since 1939, the USDA reports. The Aug. 1 condition was rated at 66 percent, the same as a month earlier but 18 points below a year earlier.

Dial soap operations at Aurora, Ill., were reduced by one-third early this month. A critical shortage of tallow caused by the beef price ceiling compounded by tallow exports is given as the reason.
