Dwindling Membership
Ends Trapping Group

MERTZON — Dwindling membership has spelled the demise of the Irion/Reagan county predator control club.

The committee that oversees assessments and operations of the predator club made the decision at a recent meeting. After 10 years of service to area ranchmen, the club will cease operations on Aug. 31, says Steve Coates of Mertzon.

Coates says a letter explaining the situation is in the mail to club members. A continuing decline in the number of participants has made cost of operation prohibitive for remaining active members, he noted. A letter was also sent to USDA’s animal damage control program officials to provide the required 30-day notice.

Most recently, the committee had assessed a charge of $30 per section to participants. Members of the club also had access to "hot spot" helicopters and ADC "troubleshooters" who would help in serious situations.
