Choice gleanings

"The other day," said John,
"a young feller told me how he was going to
get rich in a hurry. He said he was going to
handle livestock in the country strictly on a
small commission basis. He figured by getting a
reputation for locating and placing stock at a
very low figure, and always in an honest,
efficient manner, he could pack up all the
business around here." |

Durant, Oklahoma, is known for
several things, including the headquarters for
the Choctaw Nation and a vast acreage of peanuts.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to address
the annual chamber banquet twice three
times, if you count one cancellation because of
snow that postponed the festivities for two
weeks. |

Shortgrass Country
Nights around the fire at camp in
the Okivango Delta, the guides saved the most
frightening stories for a pre-bedtime reminder to
obey the rules on staying in our tents after
darkness and not to leave the grounds in the
daytime unescorted. |

Ronnie had one steer left in the
160, so he made arrangements for Hunky and Jeff
to come out and rope him. It was a pretty summer
morning on the Osage, not far from Pawhuska. |

As
I See It ...
I still remember my awe when I saw
the world for the first time. Really saw it, I
mean. I was seven years old and had just received
my first pair of eyeglasses. Wow. |

Its The Pitts
Me and my big mouth! I suggested to my
wife that for her birthday we get her a new horse
so she could help me gather the cattle. She
informed me that she only wanted a horse that
would go and stop when she wanted, stand without
jerking, work any place, was perfectly gentle and
didn't have any bad habits like kicking or
biting. |

Occasionally I get requests from county
trapping clubs who are struggling with membership
attrition (hence funding). They recognize that
much of their respective county now harbors more
deer hunters than sheep or goat ranchers and seek
to increase membership/support by trying to rally
the camo-clad brotherhood to join their battle
against predators. |
