Choice gleanings

"Don't look now," said John,
"but yonder comes old Swapper Smith. Betcha
the coffee he makes me a bona fide offer for some
cattle, like maybe a dime a pound for some choice
steer calves. But don't let on like I've seen him
coming or said anything about him. We've been
trying to trade for years without any success
whatever." |

Olney, Illinois, is the home of the
white squirrel. I didn't realize the significance
of that until I spoke there recently and met a
few of their old, gray, "squirrelly
characters." They said they just had two
seasons this last year July and winter.
They knew it was going to be a tough winter
because all those white squirrels were storing
nuts in anti-freeze. |

Jack's Camp originated as a free
refuge for travelers disheartened and disheveled
from crossing the huge Kalahari Desert. Jack was
a real person. The nature of his business isn't
of record. After he was killed in a plane wreck,
his son started the camp as a safari business. No
zoning permits were required. |

On The Edge Of
Common Sense
A pan of trouble is simmering on
the stove in northern Michigan. An army of
private and public infantry is engaged in a
fierce battle to keep it from boiling over.
Tuberculosis is on the rise in whitetail deer and
threatening the cow population. |

As
I See It ...
We just received another
advertisement from the Publishers Clearing House,
this time a facsimile of a tabloid newspaper with
our name liberally sprinkled throughout it by
their computer as if we had already won the
sweepstakes. |

"Thanks for agreeing to this
interview, Mother Nature. May I call you
Mom?" "I'd rather you wouldn't. What
is it you want to ask me? I haven't got all
day." |
