45 YEARS AGO

Claude Collins Sr., of Sterling City, has sold 325 mixed calves to George Higgins of Seymour, Texas, at 18 cents a pound straight across. The calves deliver September 10.

John Birdwell of Lubbock has contracted 500 of his mixed calves to Johnny Wilkens of Amarillo for October 5 delivery at unannounced prices.

Leon Wilhelm of Amarillo sold two loads of cows and calves at $153 per pair to Wilson Campbell of Amarillo. The cows were four years old with 300-pound calves on them.

Roy Harkey of San Angelo this week sold 600 mixed lambs for Haley Van Court of Crane to an Eden buyer at 16 cents a pound. He also sold 100 solidmouth ewes for Van Court at $8 each.

H.H. Hortenstine & Sons of Amarillo are reported to have sold 325 heifer yearlings weighing 650 pounds at $16.25, September 10 delivery, to Hugh Wilson of Amarillo.

40 YEARS AGO

D.C. Dilley of Borger sold, to an Amarillo buyer, 200 Angus steers expected to weigh about 850 pounds at $24 for Sept. 15 delivery; also 450 Hereford steers expected to weigh 850-875 pounds to the same buyer at $23.80 for Sept. 16 delivery.

Shirley Fox of Amarillo sold 137 light steer yearlings at $155 per head and delivered them last week to an Amarillo buyer.

R.L. George, Shamrock, Texas, bought 300 mixed calves in small bunches in the Wellington and Shamrock areas for Oct. 1-15 delivery at $28 and $30; these are expected to weigh around 425 pounds.

Kenneth LaFon of Amarillo sold, to a buyer there, 300 heifer yearlings expected to weigh 675-700 pounds at $24.50 for Oct. 1 delivery in Amarillo.

Beverley Bentley, a blue-eyed blonde from Albuquerque, was named Miss Wool of 1959 last week in San Angelo during a week-long Wool Fiesta in which beauties from 13 major wool growing states competed for the title.

Feeder lambs sold in the San Angelo area at $15-15.50 for good whitefaces and scarce blackfaces about $1 more. Some blackface feeders sold at $16.50 in private treaty.

Roy and Earl Brown of Adrian sold 200 mixed calves expected to weigh 425 pounds for Oct. 15 delivery at $27 and $29 to a buyer in Phoenix, Ariz.

E. Vanderberg of Spearman sold 200 mixed breed steers weighing 613 pounds at $23.25 to A.J. Kemp, Dimmitt.

Wayne Yocum of Hereford bought four strings of fed steers in the Panhandle for Wilson & Co. of Oklahoma City from Hereford Feedlots, 209 steers described as choice with a good end weighing 1200-1225 pounds at $24, and from Jimmy McAndrews of Hereford, 240 good with choice end steers weighing 975-1000 pounds at $23.40.

30 YEARS AGO

About 6000 lambs have moved through the Powers Livestock Sales Yards, Sonora, this week at $22.50-23, most averaging 70-75 pounds. Majority of these are whiteface mutton lambs; few ewe lambs are moving.

Ralph Britten, Groom, bought 120 Hereford and Angus heifers weighing 600 pounds at $24 from Jerry O'Neal, Whitedeer, Texas.

World wool production in 1968 (including the 1968-69 season in the Southern Hemisphere) is estimated at 6,162 million pounds, up 1.1 percent from the 6,094 million produced in 1967 and 7.2 percent from the 1961-65 annual average of 5,750 million, reports the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.

Charlie Waller, Roswell, N.M., sold 600 head of purehead commercial Columbia 5-6 year-old open ewes at $20-22 per head through Roswell Livestock Commission Co.

Only 2225 cattle entered Texas from Mexico during August, reports the Texas Animal Health Commission. Shipments of cattle from Texas to other states during the month totaled 287,931 head, sheep 28,178 head.

The USDA estimated this year's record winter wheat crop in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico at 709 million bushels.

Claude A. Fort & Sons and J.D. Doran, Lovington, sold to a Colorado buyer 800 Hereford, black baldface and Charolais heifer and steer yearlings weighing about 750 and 800 pounds at $55 and $60.

Jerry Dean, Lovington, sold to Smokey Mahoney, Roswell, for Oct. 3 delivery 300 Hereford heifer and steer calves to weigh 500 and 550 pounds at $62 and $70.

Jay Tulk, Maljamar, N.M., sold to a New Mexico buyer 90 crossbred heifer and steer calves weighing about 425 and 460-475 pounds at $65 and $70.
