"It makes me mighty sad," said
John, "to realize that the older I get the
less I know, but I'll swear it's the truth. If I
keep going on this way, pretty soon I'll have to
hire a psychiatrist to tell me whether I ought to
raise livestock or get the C.C.C. to let me
whittle pipes out of government-owned
corncobs." |

Pokin' Fun
Recently a fellow set a world
record, made 1000 parachute jumps in 24 hours and
lived to tell about it. How would you like to be
carrying his insurance? Sky diving gives me a
falling sensation just to think about it. I never
did care for any sport that you had to do exactly
right the first time. |

The flight plan from Livingstone
airport in Zambia followed the Zambezi River
downstream from Victoria Falls to land on an
airstrip every bit as smooth as the dirt ones on
New Mexico ranches. From the air, a few villages
of cone-shaped thatch roofed huts appeared
reminiscent of Jungle Jim's old movies. |

On The Edge Of
Common Sense
This was a summer that brought joy
to the hearts of global warming believers. The
National Climatic Data Center says 1998 is likely
to be the warmest year on record in the last 600
years. |

As
I See It ...
I've been studying driving habits
on our two-lane roads that are blessed with wide
paved shoulders. Local driving custom requires
that a slower moving vehicle (the
"pass-ee") drift right onto the
shoulder as a courtesy so that a faster vehicle
(the "pass-or") can overtake without
pulling left of the center line. |

Its The Pitts
There's an organization to conserve and
preserve everything these days. A conservancy
exists to save nature, ozone, buildings and every
species of plant and animal that is about to be
evolved out of existence. |

If you catch me bragging, and my bird
dogs arent the subject, chances are
its about the Bobwhite Brigade. Now in its
sixth year, this bobwhite "boot camp"
for high school youth has certainly provided me
with enough experiences to fill a lifetime.
Originating from the rolling hills north of
Abilene, additional camps have since sprung up in
East Texas (since 96) and just this year in
South Texas. |
