Eco Group Suit Lists
38 California Species
TUCSON, Ariz. Always one for the grand gesture,
an Arizona eco-radical group has filed a lawsuit modestly
estimated to have the potential of tying up land uses
throughout California.
The Southwest Center for Biological Diversity is suing
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered
Species Act for failing to designate critical habitat for
38 animal species in California.
The suit, it is said, could prevent any changes to
ecosystems throughout the state.
Species named in the notice to sue include the San
Clemente loggerhead shrike, San Clemente sage sparrow,
California least tern, Tidewater goby, Coho salmon,
Steelhead trout, Lost River sucker, Shortnose sucker,
Laguna Mountains skipper butterfly, Bay checkerspot
butterfly, Behren's silverspot butterfly, Callippe
silverspot butterfly, Myrtle's silverspot butterfly, Kern
primerose sphinx moth, Zayante band-winged grasshopper,
Alameda whipsnake, Island night lizard, Southwestern
arroyo toad, California red-legged frog, San Diego fairy
shrimp, Riverside fairy shrimp, California freshwater
shrimp, Shasta crayfish, Conservancy fairy shrimp,
Longhorn fairy shrimp, Vernal pool tadpole shrimp, Delhi
Sands flower-loving fly, Stephan's kangaroo rat, San
Bernardino kangaroo rat, Pacific pocket mouse, Giant
kangaroo rat, Tipton kangaroo rat, Point Arena mountain
beaver, and Morro Shouldband Snail.
(About the only thing missing from that inventory
of California birds, bugs and vermin is the Enameled
kitchen synk Ed.)
