TAKING THE MEASURE of cattle in this year’s Texas Cattle Feeders’ Fed Beef Challenge, participants judge steers on the hoof recently at Amarillo Livestock Auction.

Fed Beef Challenge

AMARILLO — A Stratford, Texas feedyard won both the champion carcass and third place pen of steers in the Texas Cattle Feeders Association's annual Fed Beef Challenge here.

Walter Lasley and Sons Inc. entered the champion carcass, and one of the two pens of cattle they entered in the Fed Beef Challenge won third place in the steer division.

Wolf Creek Feedyard, Perryton, won first place in the steer division. McCloy Feedlot, Morse, placed second.

Stratford Feedyard, Stratford, won first place in the heifer division with their pen of three cattle, XIT Feeders, Dalhart, placed second, and Cattle Town Inc., Hereford, was third in the heifer division.

Almost 50 feedyards entered the challenge. Each yard entered a minimum of three head per pen.

The cattle were slaughtered and graded at the IBP packing plant in Amarillo.
