45 YEARS AGO

T.J. McKnight and Sons of Roswell this week sold 7000 mixed Corriedale feeder lambs to Petersen Sheep Company of Spencer, Iowa, at 14 cents a pound. The lambs, to start delivering from the family ranches October 10, are expected to average around 70 pounds and will have a small percent of fats.

Virgil Powell of San Angelo has sold two carloads of mixed calves for delivery this week to a local buyer at 15 and 16 cents a pound for heifers and steers, respectively.

Bond-Baker Company of Roswell, New Mexico, this week bought several bunches of crossbred feeder lambs for their feedlots at $13 to $13.50, and one bunch with a fat end at $13.75.

Buck York of Midland, Texas, and Vaughn, New Mexico, is reported to have sold and delivered about 350 cows and calves this week off his Las Vegas ranch at $115 per pair.

Fowler McDaniel of Tulia is reported to have sold 1000 fed heifer yearlings weighing 800 pounds at $21.50 to Swift & Company, Fort Worth.

Andy Hamilton of Clayton, N.M., sold 180 steer yearlings expected to weigh near 750 pounds at $26 to an Iowa feeder for Oct. 11 delivery.

Billy Scivally of Amarillo bought 111 mixed breed steer yearlings weighing around 675 pounds at $24 for delivery this week from J.C. Rhoderick, Quitaque, Texas.

Ralph Chain and L.N. Chain of Canton, Okla., recently sold 450 choice Hereford steer yearlings expected to weigh 725-750 pounds at $27.50 for Oct. 10-20 delivery.

Fred Darden of Visalia, Calif., bought, for California feeders, 100 mixed breed feeder steers weighing around 650 pounds at $22.25 from Cordell Wall, Clayton, N.M.

W.W. Braden Jr., Amarillo, sold 300 Hereford and mixed breed steers weighing 759 pounds at $25.40 to Buster Wheat of Allen, Kan., delivered Sept. 21; these were summered near Rosalia, Kan.

Clarence Lutes of Pampa, Texas, sold 97 steer yearlings averaging 720 pounds at $22.50, delivered to Tom Price, Pampa.

Producers Wool & Mohair Co., Del Rio, sold 224,633 pounds of fall wool at prices ranging between 45 and 50 cents offered in sealed bids, according to Virgil Cauthorn, manager.

Bill Wallace, Amarillo, bought for Supreme Beef Co., Lubbock, 600 good and choice fed steers weighing 1125 pounds at $23.25 and received them from Cluck Cattle Co., Dimmitt.

T.M. Dye of Roswell sold two loads of choice blackface feeder lambs averaging 82 pounds at $16.25 to a northern buyer.

Red meat production in the U.S. during August this year totaled 2.395 billion pounds, up one percent from a year earlier and two percent above July this year. Cattle killed during August this year averaged 1010 pounds liveweight.

Melton Provision Co. in San Antonio has added 2000 square feet to its killing floor and a new on-the-rail system for cattle slaughter to allow it to handle cattle, sheep and goats simultaneously. The firm added an extension to its sheep and goat line, also.

Jess Koonsman, Snyder, Texas, sold 270 Hereford mixed calves weighing 453 and 486 at $26 and $29 delivered to Jimmy Davis, Hart.

Limon Feedlot, Limon, Colo., sold 210 heifers weighing 925 pounds and grading about 90 percent choice at $26.80 to a Pueblo packer.

Lawrence Hagen, Buelah, Colo., sold 1600 Hereford steers weighing 700-800 pounds at $25.60 and delivered them to Rocky Ford Feed Yard, Rocky Ford, Colo., with two percent shrink.

Fairleigh Feed Yard, Scott City, Kan., sold 153 heifers weighing 950 pounds and grading about 75 percent choice at $26.25 to a Garden City packer.

Nearly 1 ¼ million pounds of Texas fall wool has been sold during the last week, prices averaging close to $1 per grease pound.

Tommy Buckner, Dalhart, bought in that area 120 Okie heifers weighing about 425 pounds at $46.

Boots Harlan, Clayton, bought in the Roy and Las Vegas, N.M. areas 500 Hereford and black baldface heifer and steer calves weighing about 375 and 400 pounds at $60 and $65.

About 2000-3000 mostly feeder lambs were sold out of the Cokeville-Kemmerer, Wyo. area at $30 weighed and delivered into Idaho.

All prices are delivered to Nebraska.
