45 YEARS AGO

Virgil Powell of San Angelo has sold two carloads of mixed calves for delivery this week to a local buyer at 15 and 16 cents a pound for heifers and steers, respectively.

Bob Alexander of Gruver, Texas, is reported to have sold, to Carl Franks of Oklahoma City, 100 plain fleshy feeder steers averaging 850 to 900 pounds at $16 cwt., September 29 delivery.

Buck York of Midland, Texas, and Vaughn, New Mexico, is reported to have sold and delivered about 350 cows and calves this week off his Las Vegas ranch at $115 per pair.

Hal Bogle of Dexter, New Mexico, last week bought around 1000 mixed feeder lambs from Graciano Yriart of Roswell at 14 cents a pound.

Bond-Baker Company of Roswell, New Mexico, this week bought several bunches of crossbred feeder lambs for their feedlots at $13 to $13.50 and one bunch with a fat end at $13.75.

The Bridwell Ranch at Adrian, Texas, is reported to have sold 200 heifer yearlings weighing near 700 pounds at $25 for delivery this week; also, off the ranch near Romero, about 650 steer yearlings at $27 for those weighing under 800 pounds and $26 on heavier weights, also for delivery this week.

Clifton Sharp of Hartley, Texas, sold 211 heifer yearlings weighing near 700 pounds to an Amarillo buyer for delivery Oct. 18 in Springfield, Colo., at $25 with two percent shrink and 10 percent cut.

Jack Steinmitz of Dodge City, Kan., bought 400 Brahman heifer yearlings weighing about 600 pounds at $21 for delivery this week from Young & Cooper of Wichita.

Henry Cone of Amarillo sold 100 Hereford cows three to seven years old, with four calves on them, at $220 to Jack Louder of Happy, Texas, delivered Oct. 1; he also sold 69 Angus cows weighing near 1050 pounds with 49 calves on them at $275 to a Mr. Mills of Abernathy, delivered last week.

Elmer Kelton has been named editor of The Sheep & Goat Raiser, official magazine of the Texas Sheep & Goat Raisers Assn., announced James L. Powell of Ft. McKavett, association president.

Kelton is former agricultural editor of the San Angelo Standard-Times, where he has worked for about 15 years. A native of Crane, Texas, where his father, Buck Kelton, is manager of the McElroy Ranch Co., Elmer is a journalism graduate of Texas University and is an infantry veteran of the European Theater of Operations in World War II.

Crockett Kehoe of Amarillo bought 165 good and choice heifer yearlings averaging 600-625 pounds at $22 from A.D. Weatherly off his ranch at Des Moines, N.M.

Pat Slavin of Lubbock sold 390 steer yearlings weighing 635 pounds at $21.75 and delivered them in Amarillo to Illinois buyers.

Harold Wilson, Muleshoe, Texas, sold and delivered 200 heifer yearlings weighing 610 pounds at $22.50 to Illinois buyers.

Cattle and calves on feed in 56 Arizona feedlots totaled 239,767 head on Sept. 26, reports the Arizona Cattle Feeders Assn.

Bulk of the 65-80 pound West Texas feeder lambs brought $24-25, lightweights $25-26. Good and choice 60-80 pound feeders were quoted at $24-25, a few 60-65 pounders $25-25.60, and some under 60 pounds up to $26 in the San Angelo auction.

Wheatheart Feeders, Perryton, Texas, sold 300 heifers weighing 900 pounds, grading 90 percent choice, at $26.60 to a Texas packer.

Southwest Livestock Trading Co., Uvalde and Del Rio, has bought 310 clipped whiteface lambs, fully mixed, at $24 from Jake Merck, Sonora, averaging 57 pounds; and 450 big mutton goats at $8.50 from the Garner & Ashby Rocksprings ranch, delivered to Del Rio.

Cal-Tex Feed Yard, Trent, has sold 84 steers weighing 1019 at $26.50; 65 heifers, mostly good, weighing 700 at $25.40; 35 heifers, mostly good, weighing 700 at $25.75.

Davidson Feed Pens, Pecos, sold 123 mostly good 725 pound heifers at $25.50 to a South Texas packer.

Junction Stockyards has been bought by Willard Jordan, Mason auctioneer and ranchman. The auction firm was founded about 15 years ago by Charlie Schwartz, who has extensive ranching interests in the Junction area.

The Pratt (Kansas) Tribune reports 11.75 inches of rain in that area for the month of September.

Sol Bouziden, Alva, Okla., bought and received from the L.T. Lewis Estate Ranch, Encino, N.M., 700 top quality Hereford and black baldface steer yearlings weighing 706 pounds of $50.

Potter Craig, Clovis, bought in the Portales area 185 Okie steers weighing about 650 pounds at $51.75 f.o.b. Clovis.

Sonora Wool & Mohair Co. sold 35,000 pounds of yearling hair, average quality 26/28s left over from the firm's last sealed bid sale, at $5.45. Also sold were 7000 pounds of cleanup adult at $4.50.

O.C. Kimble, Clayton, N.M., sold to an Amarillo buyer 100 Angus and black baldface heifers weighing 640 pounds at $59.

Adult mohair set a new season's high Wednesday at Uvalde Producers Wool and Mohair Co. The firm sold 65,000 pounds of average adult at $5 and 45,000 pounds of fine adult at $5.10-5.25, average about $5.20. The firm sold 25,000 pounds of yearling at $5.40-5.55.

Babbitt Ranches, Flagstaff, Ariz., sold 1900 steers, mostly Herefords with a few Shorthorn crosses, weighing 800 pounds at $54.50, also 1100 heifer mates weighing 500 at $50.50.

In New Mexico 75-95 pound feeder lambs brought $68-70 and the same price range took Colorado lambs weighing 50-80 pounds. Wyoming turned 80 pound lambs at $68 and in Montana 80 pounders earned $70. In Utah 94-105 pound offerings went for $70-71.50.

Joe Johnson, representing Cherry Cattle Co., Bowling Green, Ky., sold on a delivered basis to a Nebraska buyer one load of No. 1 mixed color newcrop steer and bull calves weighing 333 pounds at $107.10, also a load of similar heifers with a few Herefords, weighing 399 at $81.01; to a Kansas buyer a load of similar steers and bulls weighing 404 at $91.16; to a Colorado buyer a load of heifers weighing 365 at $88; to a Missouri buyer a load of heifers weighing 643 at $78.37.
