"Developments of the past week or so give a man plenty to talk about whether he knows anything intelligent to say about them or not," said John. "Some of them are encouraging, some ironical, and some downright amazing."

Pokin' Fun
Wharton, Texas. It's been a week now since the great flood of '98. The national news media covered us for days. There were shots of two cows on the roof of a house, the governor flying over in a helicopter, and people wading out of their homes in waist-deep water. Where are they now when we started the clean-up, not to mention the rodeo that occurred when the water receded and they tried to get those cows down?

After the poetry festival ended, a major toll road called the Garden State Parkway routed me all the way down to Cape May in the southeast corner of New Jersey, against Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Coast. Unlike driving in the Southwest, cruising along in the slow lane at 65 miles an hour, New England states don't last long. About the same amount of time, in fact, a fast driver takes to cross a county in New Mexico.

On The Edge Of Common Sense
You would think professional sports would be the last thing animal rights loonies would be concerned about. After all, it's only about abusing humans. Although they might have objections to the use of animals for team names, such as the Cardinals, the Cubs, the Porpoises or the Cowboys.

Deer hunting season just concluded in my neck of the woods so it MAY be safe to go outside once again. I say "may" because of the exploits this season of a crazy friend of mine.

On Matters of...Equine
The most disturbing phone call at this time of year is the one from a distressed mare owner who just found out that a mare slipped her foal. Searching for answers, they invariably make the comment, "Perhaps I should put my mare on progesterone next year to help her through her pregnancy."
