Stock Calves Higher Last Week,
Feeders Lower In Most Places

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Feeder cattle prices were mixed around the country last week, steer and heifer calves generally selling firm to $3 higher except in Wyoming where prices ran steady to $3 lower and in Kentucky, steady to $2 off. Yearling steers and heifers were weak to $2 lower.

Calf buyers began to pick up a little steam in securing numbers to stock improving wheat pastures, but yearling buyers couldn't muster much enthusiasm to chase prices while watching fed cattle prices slump back down again. Fed cattle in the High Plains saw the majority of sales around the $61 level.

Continued huge runs of hogs kept their prices in the teens and provided a lot of cheap meat to compete with beef. Mild fall weather covered a large share of the country and producers were not in any hurry to get feeders to town for prices they really don't want to accept.

Yearlings made up approximately 31 percent of the week's run.
