"Being afflicted with a chronic case of confusion," said John, "is mighty painful. I've been that way a long time but nobody pays much attention to me. I keep asking questions without getting any answers except by waiting for them to answer themselves.

Pokin' Fun
When Henry Ford came out with his Model A automobile, lots of people bought the kind with a rumble seat. It was all an open-air affair, and kids loved to ride in the rumble section because even when the top was up over the driver, the rumble seat was exposed to the elements — the wind, big fat juicy bugs.

At this writing, I am in Vista, California, a small town in northern San Diego County. Not small like Mertzon, but small for a community 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean between such populous giants as San Diego and Las Angeles. The motel management agreed to allow me inside the office to write as long as the door stayed locked by a deadbolt and I agreed to keep out of the way of the office work.

On The Edge Of Common Sense
It could have been a Christmas story but it wasn't. It was young Ty's eighth birthday. He had his heart set on a baby hamster. Kim was a Boone & Crockett mother and set out to fill her young cub's needs.

As I See It ...
I recently spent some time in Houston babysitting for our almost-two-year-old grandson, Darin. Of course, I had the option of taking him home with me for the week, but given the choice between watching him 10 hours a day in his air-conditioned suburban house or keeping him safe and happy 24 hours a day at our place, suburbia won hands down.

The summer of '98 was a scorcher here in West Texas, though as of December 7, there's at least a hint of a killing frost. But as ornery as Mother Nature has been since April, at least she's going out with a touch of class. I've never seen such a brilliant display of foliage as during the last 45 days. Xanthophiliacs (xanthophyll is the plant pigment responsible for the fall hues) have surely enjoyed a once in a lifetime fall for colorful landscapes. Perhaps it's Mother Nature's way of tendering an apology for a seemingly never-ending summer of record highs and dry weather.
